THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... begin a four-game series against the Stockton Ports this evening at Municipal Stadium. The Giants posted a 3-3 record on their recently completed homestand taking two of three from the Ports before managing just one victory in three games versus the Visalia Rawhide. In yesterday's series rubber game against the Rawhide, Pat McAnaney tossed seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in Visalia's 3-2 win. San Jose had failed to score in 17 consecutive innings in the series until Ehire Adrianza connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Justin Fitzgerald suffered the loss for the Giants after surrendering three runs (all earned) on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Media Coverage... The entire series from Stockton can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com with Joe Ritzo calling all of the action.
Final Road Series... The current four-game set in Stockton serves as the final road series of the regular season for the Giants. San Jose is 39-27 away from Municipal Stadium this year - the top road record in the North Division. The Giants need three victories against the Ports to match last season's road win total (42-28). The 2009 team finished with the fifth-best single-season road record in club history. San Jose finishes the regular season with a seven-game homestand against the Inland Empire 66ers and Visalia Rawhide beginning on Tuesday.
Peguero, Surkamp Named To Postseason All-Star Team... Outfielder Francisco Peguero and starting pitcher Eric Surkamp were named to the California League Postseason All-Star team today. Peguero, one of three outfielders selected to the team, is tied for fifth in the league in batting average (.316), first in triples (15) and third in stolen bases (38). Peguero is batting .354 since the All-Star break. Surkamp, who hasn't pitched since July 18 due to a hip injury and is out for the remainder of the season, compiled a 4-2 record with a 3.11 ERA in 17 starts with the Giants. Surkamp was ranked among the league leaders in ERA and strikeouts prior to his injury. The left-hander struck out 108 compared to just 22 walks over 101 1/3 innings this season while holding the opposition to a .218 batting average. Surkamp is one of four pitchers on the postseason All-Star team.
San Jose Leads Division By Three Games... The Giants (70-59) possess a three-game lead over the Stockton Ports (67-62) and Visalia Rawhide (67-62) for the top overall record in the North Division with 11 games remaining in the regular season. Home field advantage (hosting Game Five) in the North Division Series will be awarded to the team with the best overall record that's won a half.
Flores File... Infielder Jose Flores is batting at a .425 clip (31- for-73) with 16 RBI's over his last 18 games. Flores' season batting average now stands at a team-best .333. Flores is currently four plate appearances shy of qualifying for the league-leaders in batting average. He would currently rank third in the California League in hitting (High Desert's Kyle Seager leads at .346). The versatile player has started games at third base, shortstop, second base, left field and right field this season.
Giants-Ports Season Series... The Giants currently own a 13-9 advantage over Stockton in the season series, including a 7-5 mark at Banner Island Ballpark.
Peguero Extends Hitting Streak To Nine Games... Outfielder Francisco Peguero finished 1-for-5 yesterday to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Peguero owns a .350 average (14-for-40) during the current hit streak.
Stoffel's Saves... Relief pitcher Jason Stoffel has converted his last 11 save opportunities dating back to July 7. In 18 relief appearances during that span, Stoffel possesses a 2.60 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings. His 23 saves this season are fifth in the California League and tops in the San Francisco Giants farm system.
San Jose Wins League Record Sixth Consecutive First Half Title... The San Jose Giants won their California League record sixth consecutive first half North Division title this season. The Giants finished the first half with a 45-25 mark - eight games ahead of both the Modesto Nuts (37-33) and Visalia Rawhide (37-33). By virtue of winning the first half, San Jose secures a berth in the playoffs and will receive a first round bye. The Giants have won three league championships (2005, 2007, 2009) in the last five seasons and will be attempting to win back-to-back titles for the first time in franchise history this September. San Jose will open the playoffs on Saturday, September 11 at Municipal Stadium with Game One of the best-of-five North Division Series. The previous league record for consecutive first half division titles was three (Visalia).
Stockton Ports... The Stockton Ports, an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, enter tonight's action with an overall record of 67-62 and a second half mark of 36-23 - four games ahead of the Bakersfield Blaze (32-27) for the top spot in the North Division. The Ports have won 16 out of their last 19 games. Shortstop Grant Green is eighth in the league in batting average (.312), second in hits (158) and second in doubles (36).
