Mavericks Rally in Seventh, Win 10-8

July 5, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

Over the last three years, the Mavs had shown a flair for the dramatic on their Independence Day game. Although they didn't walk off with a win Sunday, they had a monster seven-run sixth inning to defeat Rancho Cucamonga 10-8 in front of 4,658 fans at Mavericks Stadium.

Trailing 6-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Mavs put together one of their biggest rallies of season. The first eight men to step to the plate all reached base, the last six of which collected hits.

An RBI single pulled the Mavs within two, and the Quakes elected to make a pitching change. Nick Pugliese proceeded to allow hits to each of the first five men he faced.

Jake Shaffer tied the game with a two-run double. Dennis Raben took the first pitch from Pugliese (2-2) out of the park to give the Mavs an 8-6 lead.

Three batters later, Johermyn Chavez delivered a two-run single to finish the incredible stretch and put the Mavs ahead 10-6.

The Quakes would score once the next inning to make it 10-7. Luis Jimenez led off the ninth with a solo homer, but Wes Littleton retired the next three hitters to earn his second save.

Early on, it looked like the Mavs might spoil the 4th of July celebration. They plated two runs in the first. An RBI groundout by Dillon Baird started the scoring, and Angel Castillo drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0.

The Mavs would tie the game in the second when Denny Almonte connected on a two-run homer.

Rich Poythress knocked a solo shot in the third to give the Mavs their first lead of the night.

The Quakes responded with a big homer of their own in the fourth to regain the lead. Rian Kiniry hit a three-run shot to put the Quakes ahead 5-3.

Kiniry came through in the sixth as well with a two-out RBI single to make it 6-3. The left fielder finished 4-for-5 with four RBI's.

Chavez and Poythress led the Mavs with three hits apiece. Four different Mavs collected two RBI's.

Maverick reliever Cheyne Hann (1-4) earned his first win of the year, allowing one run over one inning pitched.

The Mavs will shoot for their seventh win in eight games when they face the Quakes at 7:05 p.m. Monday night. Come join the Mavericks for an Ebmeyer Charter Munchie Monday, with all nachos, hamburgers, and sodas on sale for just $1! For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
