San Jose Giants News Release
Joel Weeks, Johnny Monell and Jose Flores smacked home runs and the San Jose Giants finished with 20 hits in a 13-1 blowout victory over the Bakersfield Blaze in front of a sellout crowd at Sam Lynn Ballpark on Sunday evening. Every San Jose starter recorded at least one hit as the Giants cruised to the win in the opener of their six-game road trip. With the victory, San Jose improves their overall record to 48-33.
Wendell Fairley (4-for-6, 2 2B) collected four hits to lead the Giants offensive attack. Flores (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Michael Ambort (3-for-4, RBI) contributed three hits while Monell (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), Francisco Peguero (2-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI) and Charlie Culberson (2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI) added two hits and two RBI's apiece.
Oliver Odle (9-2) became the first nine-game winner in the California League this season after matching a season-high with seven innings pitched. Odle surrendered one run on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Giants quickly jumped ahead with four runs - all with two outs - in the top of the second inning. Ambort began the rally with a single before Culberson drew a walk. Blaze starting pitcher Carlos Pimentel retired the next two hitters on fly outs before Weeks stepped to the plate and belted the first pitch of his at-bat over the wall in right center field for a two-run homer. James Simmons was up next and he singled, stole second base and then scored on Ehire Adrianza's single into right.
Bakersfield scored their only run of the contest in the bottom of the third inning as Tommy Mendonca led off with a double and scored three batters later on Davis Stoneburner's fielder's choice groundout.
Monell put San Jose back ahead by four runs when he crushed a solo homer to deep right field in the top of the fourth. San Jose then put the game out of reach with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
In the top of the fifth, consecutive doubles from Fairley and Peguero to begin the inning produced one run. After Peguero advanced to third on a wild pitch, Ambort delivered a sacrifice fly to center. Culberson then doubled off the fence in left center before scoring when the next hitter, Monell, blooped a single into shallow center.
The next inning, Fairley and Peguero again came through with back-to-back doubles - this time with two outs - to score the first run of the frame. After Ambort singled, Culberson drove another double off the wall in deep left center as two runs scored to make it 11-1.
The Giants plated their final two runs of the night in the top of the ninth as Monell drew a leadoff walk before Flores hammered a two-run homer down the right field line.
At one point, Odle retired eight consecutive Blaze hitters from the third through the fifth innings. He worked around a two-out single in both the fifth and sixth before stranding a pair of runners in scoring position in the seventh.
David Quinowski (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth before Jason Stoffel (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning to finish the contest.
Pimentel (5-4) suffered the loss for Bakersfield after yielding a season-high eight runs (all earned) on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three.
