INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks closed out their four-game home stand with a 5-3 win over the Allen Americans in their inaugural Education Day Game. Missouri used a three-goal outburst in the first period to pace the win and improve their record to 4-7-1 on the season.

The Mavericks showed no signs of being out of rhythm due to today's early start time. They killed off an early Allen power play to snag some momentum and then built off of it with their own power play nearly midway through the first. As he worked from the point, Ryan Obuchowski spotted a shooting lane and let fly a wrister that beat Riley Gill for a 1-0 Mavs lead and his first professional goal. Nearly eight minutes after Obuchowski's goal the Mavericks struck for a pair just over 30 seconds apart to widen their lead.

Justin Selman and Kevin Tansey arrived yesterday from the Chicago Wolves and each had a major role in the Mavericks' surge. Selman tapped a loose puck home from atop the crease for his first goal as a Maverick, and on the next shift Tansey blasted a point shot that created a rebound for Darren Nowick to jam home. For Tansey, it was his first professional point.

The Mavericks launched 16 shots on goal in the first period to power their three-goal barrage. The second period, in contrast, saw the teams combine for just 14 shots. One of the first by the Mavericks found the back of the net courtesy of Matt Finn. The defender let go of a shot from the blueline that weaved through traffic in front and beat Gill 2:59 into the frame. That ended the day for the Allen netminder and Jamie Murray came on in relief. At the other end of the ice, Eamon McAdam brought the crowd to its feet with a sprawling glove save on Chris Crane that robbed what looked like a sure goal.

The Americans had a chance to battle back in the third thanks to numerous power play opportunities. Travis brown put Allen on the board just before the frame was two minutes old with the only even-strength goal of the period. Spencer Asuchak followed with a 6-on-3 goal as the Americans pulled Murray for an extra attacker while up two men. Moments after Missouri's second penalty expired, Tanner Eberle deflected a point shot to make it 4-3. Things got tense in the final 2:35 when Kyle Schempp picked up a tripping minor. But shot
