Mavericks Hold Off RiverKings Playoff Series Opener

INDEPENDENCE, MO --- The Mississippi RiverKings dropped a 4-2 decision to the Missouri Mavericks in the opener of a best-of-three first round Ray Miron President's Cup playoff series on Monday, March 22nd in suburban Kansas City.

Game two of the series will be at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven on Wednesday, March 24th and, if needed, game three will be back at the DCC on Thursday, March 25th. Missouri took a 3-1 lead in the first period of this game on goals from Bill Vandermeer, Jordan Foreman, and Brett Hammond. The RiverKings' only goal of the period came from Elias Godoy, who netted his first goal of the playoffs at 13:54 on a feed from Bobby Chaumont, a goal that tied the game at 1-1. There was no scoring in the second period, as the RiverKings outshot the Mavericks by a 13-11 margin.

The RiverKings got within one goal in the third period on Darrell's Stoddard's first playoff marker, assisted by Louis Dumont, but Missouri scored an empty-net goal with 54 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Mississippi was 0-for-5 on the power play, while Missouri scored once on the power play and that goal, from Hammond in the first period, would turn out to be the game-winning tally.

The RiverKings were outshot 33-29 in the contest. Mississippi goaltender Kyle McNulty made 29 saves in taking the loss, while Missouri goalie Charlie Effinger earned the win with 27 saves.
