July 25, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

San Jose starting pitcher Justin Fitzgerald pitched the game of his career and a late Mavericks rally fell a bit short Saturday night as they fell 3-2 against the Giants at Municipal Stadium.

Fitzgerald (8-2) tossed a career-high eight innings, allowing one run and just two hits. He walked three early on and tied a career high with eight strikeouts as well.

After struggling in the first, no one could've predicted Fitzgerald would end up having the night he did. He allowed a one- out double to Jake Shaffer and then threw a wild pitch to put him at third.

Dennis Raben grounded out, and Fitzgerald walked the next three straight batters. His bases loaded walk to Johermyn Chavez gave the Mavs a 1-0 lead.

Fitzgerald struck out Denny Almonte to end the first, a play that began a stretch of 21 straight hitters retired by the Giants hurler.

The Mavs didn't have another baserunner until two outs in the eighth when Kyle Seager collected a single to extend his hit streak to 30 games. Fitzgerald got Shaffer to ground out to end the inning and finish his night.

The Giants took the lead in the second inning. After an error by Shaver Hansen to start the inning, Michael Sandoval followed with a two-run homer to make it 2-1.

Jon Hesketh kept the Mavs in the game, despite get no run support. The homer was his only mistake of the night, allowing just one earned run over six innings.

In the end, Hesketh (0-3) would pick up another tough luck loss to remain winless with the Mavs. He allowed only four hits, including only one over his final four innings. The lefty struck out six and walked three.

The Giants added an insurance run in the eighth when Johnny Monell hit a solo homer to right field.

San Jose closer Jason Stoffel retired the first two men of the ninth, but Rich Poythress blasted a homer to center field to pull the Mavs within one.

Chavez followed with a single, and a wild pitch put him in scoring position. Almonte then grounded out to short to end the game, giving Stoffel his 17th save.

The Mavs and Giants will play not only the rubber match of this series, but the rubber match of the season series Sunday evening at 5 p.m. Live coverage will start at 4:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
