Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(MODESTO, CA) - The JetHawks outhit the Nuts, but Modesto batters drew nine walks Sunday afternoon and that proved to be the difference as the Nuts defeated the JetHawks 7-4 in the final meeting between the two teams in the 2010 season. Out of the nine batters who walked, four eventually came in to score, providing the margin of victory.
A Brian Pellegrini home run briefly gave the JetHawks the lead in the first inning, but two hits and two walks in the bottom of the frame put the Nuts on top for good. Another walk set up a two-run inning in the third and two more walks helped the Nuts to three runs in the sixth inning.
The JetHawks hung within reach. Jhon Florentino's RBI single in the sixth at the time had Lancaster within two. And they gave themselves a chance down by five in the ninth. With two outs Andy Simunic doubled before walks to Jay Austin and Pellegrini, loading the bases. Lee Cruz drove in two runs with a single that kept hope alive before the Nuts closed out the win.
Cruz had two hits to extend his hit streak to ten straight games. Simunic, Austin, Federico Hernandez, and Florentino each had two hits as well.
The JetHawks will take Monday off before opening a six-game homestand Tuesday night against the Visalia Rawhide. Leandro Cespedes (2-3) will pitch for Lancaster against the Ryan Cook (4-5) of the Rawhide. The game begins at 7:00 and will be broadcast live online at JetHawks.com/CSN and on radio at NewsTalk 1380. The Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45.
