Kasparek, Bats Lift Mavs
July 25, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
The Mavs responded loudly one day after being held quiet at the plate, and Kenn Kasparek fired another great start as the Mavs defeated San Jose 8-3 Sunday evening at Municipal Stadium.
With the win, the Mavs took two of three in San Jose and ended up with a 4-2 record on their road trip.
Not even 24 hours after being shut down by San Jose's Justin Fitzgerald, the Mavs didn't take long to get to Oliver Odle.
The first three hitters all collected hits, including a two-run single by Johermyn Chavez. With two outs, Rich Poythress hit a solo homer to make it 3-0.
Kyle Seager added a two-run homer the next inning to expand the lead to five runs. Seager finished his day 3-for-5, running his hit streak to 31 games.
The Giants got on the board in the bottom of the second courtesy of an RBI double by Wendell Fairley. Two innings later, Drew Biery came through with a two-out RBI single to make it 5-2.
After Biery's hit, Kasparek put San Jose on lockdown. He retired 13 of the final 15 hitters he faced to keep the Mavs comfortably ahead.
Despite being on a moderate pitch count, Kasparek (7-2) still managed to go eight innings. He allowed three runs and seven hits, only striking out two but issuing no walks.
The Mavs built on their lead in the fifth, when Chavez hit a solo homer to make it 6-2.
The knockout blow came in the seventh when they plated two more runs. The Mavs collected four hits within the span of five batters, including RBI's by Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Jake Shaffer.
Francisco Peguero scored the final run for San Jose in the eighth on his seventh homer of the season.
Although he was 4-0 in his career against the Mavs, Odle (10-5) finally took a loss, allowing a season-high six runs and nine hits over five innings. He struck out three and did not have a walk.
After a day off Monday, the Mavs begin a six-game homestand Tuesday night against Inland Empire at 7:05 p.m. Bring in any Kraft Singles wrapper for a buy-one, get-one free ticket deal at the box office. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
