Milestone Approaching in Cal League

July 25, 2010 - California League (CalL1) News Release

Port Hueneme, CA - Sometime on Tuesday evening, a Cal League team will win the 40,000th game in the League's history. Since its inception in 1941, the Cal League has combined the excitement of Minor League Baseball with family entertainment to produce an atmosphere enjoyed by all. There are 5 games on Tuesday, all starting after 7:00pm PST and the 40,000th game will be determined by the official finishing time.

"This is an exciting moment in the history of the League", Cal League President, Charlie Blaney said. "I will be attending the game in Stockton on Tuesday and I will be thrilled if it happens to be the 40,000th game".

Former California League umpire and California native, Doug Harvey was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame today. He is the 12th person from the Cal League to be inducted into Cooperstown.

Harvey, 80, was a Major League Umpire from 1962 - 1992. Due to his strict focus on the rules, he was nicknamed "God" by the players. He umpired in 5 World Series, 6 All Star Games, and 9 National League Championship Series. Harvey was ranked as the second greatest umpire in history, according to the Society for American Baseball Research, behind only Bill Klem. In 2007, Referee magazine selected him as one of the 52 most influential figures in the history of sports officiating. He was a Cal League Umpire for 3 years from 1958-60.

"The Cal League is proud to have Doug Harvey in the National Baseball Hall of Fame" commented Blaney. "He has been an inspiration to our current umpires who, like the players, strive to make it to the Big Leagues".

In other Hall of Fame news, Cal League President, Charlie Blaney was recently inducted into the Albuquerque Professional Baseball Hall of Fame. Blaney, who early in his career spent 7 years as General Manager of the Albuquerque Dukes, was largely responsible for the Dodgers moving their Triple-A team to Albuequerque.

The California League regular season continues until Labor Day, September 6.
