Strong Pitching and Timely Offense Help JetHawks Beat Nuts 6-2

Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(MODESTO, CA) - The JetHawks strung together strong offense, starting pitching, and relief pitching Saturday night and the combination added up to a win. Kyle Greenwalt held Modesto to two runs and reliever Brian Wabick blanked the Nuts over the final three and 2/3 innings as the JetHawks held onto a first inning lead in a 6-2 win.

A Modesto error opened the door for the JetHawks in the opening frame. With two outs, a dropped throw allowed Brian Pellegrini to reach first base safely. Lee Cruz then walked before Brandon Barnes singled Pellegrini home. Federico Hernandez followed with a double to drive in two and Lancaster led the rest of the way.

The Nuts threatened early but Greenwalt stayed a step in front. He stranded five base runners over the first three innings before allowing two runs in the fourth as the Nuts got within one. Greenwalt pitched into the sixth inning and by that time, the JetHawks had reasserted control.

Barry Butera opened the sixth inning by tripling off the right field wall, his third hit of the game. With the defense unusually aligned with all but the second baseman drawn in, Brandon Wikoff grounded a ball perfectly to the right. The first baseman went for the ball, leaving no one to cover the base as Wikoff reached safely and Butera scored. Pellegrini added another run in the ninth inning when he followed an Andy Simunic doubled with one of his own.

The game was closed out by Brian Wabick, who matched a season-high with three strikeouts in pitching three and 2/3 scoreless frames without allowing a hit.

The JetHawks will win the series with a win in the final game of the season between the two teams Sunday afternoon in Modesto. Patrick Urckfitz (4-5) will pitch for Lancaster against the Nuts' Rob Scahill (6-5). The game begins at 1:10 and will be broadcast live online at JetHawks.com/CSN and on radio at NewsTalk 1380. The Pre-Game Show begins at 1:05.
