Mavericks Dropped by Denver

Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks gave up a 2-goal lead to fall 2-3 to the Denver Cutthroats on Friday night at the Independence Events Center.

Eric Castonguay locked in the opening lamp-lighter for Missouri, going top-shelf off a pass from Sebastien Thinel who almost doubled the Mavericks efforts a few minutes later when he drove towards the net on a breakaway. Denver obstructed Thinel's shot and the captain was awarded a penalty shot, but goaltender Kent Patterson made the stop to prevent Thinel's first attempt of the night to notch his 300th career CHL goal.

Evan Vossen came up big midway through the first period, continuing his hot point streak with his third goal in the last three games for the Mavericks. Rob Kleebaum registered the first assist for Vossen's goal with a perfectly placed pass to give the Mavs a 2-0 lead.

Shane Owen was on track for a perfect first period, when Denver's Vinent Arseneau landed a power play goal in the back of the net with under two minutes left on the clock.

Denver came into the second period on the attack, doubling their shots on goal attempts over the Mavericks in no time at all. Missouri was able to keep the aggressive team at bay for the first half of the period, but Les Moffie scored the equalizer for Denver at the 12:02 mark to tie the game 2-2.

But the Cutthroats weren't done yet; only 28 seconds into play at the top of the third period, Denver struck again to take the lead 3-2. The Mavericks were unable to find their way onto the scoreboard again to force overtime, and had to watch the Cutthroats swim away with a victory.

The Mavericks play their next game tomorrow night at the Independence Events Center for PINK in the RINK night. The Mavs will be wearing specialty pink jerseys during their matchup against the Quad City Mallards, that will be auctioned off in a live auction directly following the game in sections 101 and 102.

As part of the "Do YOU Believe in Miracles" event benefitting KCIce and their UnCommon Community fund, the Missouri Mavericks are welcoming four members of the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' USA Gold Medal Team to the Independence Events Center on Saturday night. Ken Morrow, Buzz Schneider, Dave Christian, and Mike Eruzione will be signing autographs before the Mavericks game from 6:00pm to 6:45pm before enjoying the Mavs game from the event suites. Fans who would like to take part in this once in a lifetime event can visit KCIce.net for event tickets. Mavericks game tickets are available at TicketMaster.com.
