Shots from the Point for January 31, 2014

January 31, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

Three Things You Need to Know

1.) Finals Rematch- The defending Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Champion Allen Americans (25-10-4) go head-to-head with the team they beat in seven games last May, the Wichita Thunder (17-19-4). The two teams have both been solid in January with the Americans going 8-0-2 and the Thunder going 6-4-0. Allen has won four straight games and has not suffered a regulation loss since the day after Christmas in Tulsa. Wichita has won six of their last eight games and are coming off a dramatic come-from-behind overtime win over Denver on Tuesday. Allen is in a deadlock for first place in the conference tied with Rapid City (27-11-0) and the Thunder are one point out of a playoff spot. Allen d-man Tyler Ludwig is on a league-best 13-game point streak with nine goals and eight assists over that streak. The teams will play at Wichita on Friday and at Allen on Saturday.

2.) Bembridge Hot Again- With 65 points (33-32=65) in 40 games, it is hard to find a point in the season that Denver forward Garett Bembridge has not been hot but over his last four games, the veteran has five goals and two assists. His 33 strikes on the season are eight more than any other player (RPD's Konrad Reeder has 25) and his 65 points are most in the league as well. Bembridge has been held without a point in amazingly just five of the Cutthroats 40 games. He leads the league in power play goals (12), shots (235) and is tied for the lead in game winning goals (6). Bembridge and the Cutthroats are in action this weekend at Missouri on Friday and at Tulsa on Saturday.

3.) Mavs Streaking Into February- The Missouri Mavericks (25-11-2) have won three straight games and are staying in the conversation near the top of the CHL standings currently sitting with 52 points, just two behind both Rapid City (27-11-0) and Allen (25-10-4). Missouri has fought their way through suspensions and numerous injuries and after starting January with three straight losses, they have righted the ship with a 5-1-1 record over their last seven games. The Mavs have outscored the opposition 26-15 over those seven games and both losses were by just one goal. Missouri hosts Denver (19-12-9) on Friday and Quad City (18-9-8) on Saturday. Sebastien Thinel and Andrew Courtney each have six points over their team's last five games.

By the Numbers

0: The number of regulation losses that both the Allen Americans (25-10-4) and Arizona Sundogs (18-18-3) have suffered in the month of January. Both clubs are sitting with a near perfect 8-0-2 record in the first month of 2014 and both are looking to stay unbeaten in regulation when they play this weekend. Allen is at Wichita (17-19-4) and Arizona will host Rapid City (27-11-0).

One-Timers

-Wichita goaltender David Brown has been on fire lately winning five of his last six decisions allowing just nine goals in those five wins. He is 8-7-0 on the season with a 2.74 goals against average.

-Although they are on a five-game win streak, the Tulsa Oilers (19-21-3) have been hanging in there even strength sitting just -3 over the five games when skating 5-on-5. Special teams have been the problem as they are just 1 for 15 with the man advantage and they have allowed five PP goals against. Tulsa plays at Quad City (18-9-8) on Friday.

-The Quad City Mallards (18-9-8) return home on Friday after a four-game road trip that saw them go 2-1-1. The Flock started off the journey in Wichita and fell 7-1 but rebounded to earn points in the next three games. QDC hosts Tulsa on Friday, a team they have split two games with so far this season.

-After opening the season with a league-record 12 straight road wins, the Rapid City Rush (27-11-0) have dropped four of their last five contests away from home. On Wednesday, the Rush suffered one of their most lopsided defeats of the season falling 5-1 in Arizona.

-The St. Charles Chill are stuck in a five-game slide that has seen them allow 24 goals over those five games (4.8 per game). On the season, the Chill are last in the league allowing 3.93 goals per game. St. Charles host Brampton on Friday and Saturday.

-Missouri goaltender Shane Owen leads the league with 20 wins this season and was the workhorse for the Mavs in their 4-1 win at St. Charles on Wednesday stopping 26 of 27 shots despite not earning the decision. Erno Suomalainen stopped all eight shots he faced before being forced to leave the game in the first period with an injury. Owen is 20-8-1 on the season.
