Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks were handed their second straight loss in a row by the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday night at the Independence Events Center. Andrew Courtney scored his 33rd goal of the season, furthering his claim on the Mavericks' franchise record for single-season goals.
Scoreless through the first period, the Missouri Mavericks and Tulsa Oilers battled for a point through a physical frame that saw penalties drawn from both sides of the ice totaling 16 minutes.
The Oilers were the first on the board, with back-to-back goals from Steve Mele and Scott Macaulay (PPG). Mike Ramsay answered back for the Mavericks with his own power play goal, assisted by Eric Castonguay and Matt Stephenson. Tulsa was quick to retaliate, netting a third goal in the period via Eric Tallent. Then Tyler Currier brought Missouri back to within 1 of the Oilers with his 4th goal of the season, assisted by Colten Hayes and Anders Franzon.
Trailing 3-2 entering the third period, the Mavericks wasted no time letting lose shots on the Oilers goal. It was the line of Andrew Coutney, Sebastien Thinel, and Eric Castonguay that eventually broke through to tie the game 3-3, with Courtney's 33rd goal of the season. Courtney holds the new Missouri Mavericks' franchise record for single season goals.
Todd Robinson edged the Mavericks midway through the period on the power play to take back the lead 4-3. The Mavericks were denied a goal late in the game, and unable to score at even strength, pulled Shane Owen from the net for the extra attacker. Taking advantage of the situation, the Oilers were able to steal the puck away and score an empty net goal to make the board read 5-3 in the Oilers' favor.
The Mavericks play their final regular season game on the road against the Quad City Mallards on Sunday, March 30th. The Mavs' first home playoff games are scheduled for Friday, April 4th at 7:05pm and Sunday, April 6th at 6:10pm. Tickets are available in person at the Box Office, and online at TicketMaster.com.
