Oilers Down Mavs 5-3 for Fourth Straight Win

March 29, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release

INDEPENDENCE, MO - Todd Robinson has made a career off of setting up his teammates but the 35-year old veteran still has a knack for scoring timely goals. Robinson's third period power play goal proved to be the difference on Saturday night in a 5-3 victory for the Tulsa Oilers over the Missouri Mavericks. The Oilers won their fourth straight contest and picked up their second victory in as many nights over the first-place Mavs.

Tulsa rookie Steve Mele, playing in just his fourth game as an Oiler, broke a scoreless tie at the 8:58 mark of the second when he deposited a nifty pass from Chapen Leblond behind Missouri goalie Shane Owen. The Oilers lead swelled to 2-0 thanks to rookie defenseman Scott Macaulay. On the power play at 13:02, Robinson zipped a pass to the tape of Macaulay who lifted a snap shot over the glove of Owen for his third goal of the season. The Mavericks pulled back within one at 16:12 as Mike Ramsay's power play wrist shot sizzled past Brad Fogal. Tulsa restored its two-goal edge at 18:36 when Eric Tallent's shot from the right wing deflected through Owen. Once again, the Mavs responded promptly and struck again before the period came to a close. Tyler Currier stuffed home a rebound from inside the Oilers crease to cut the visitors lead to 3-2 heading into the third.

Mavericks' forward Andrew Courtney tallied the equalizer at 6:30 of the final frame when he swatted a Sebastien Thinel pass through Fogal for his 33rd goal of the season. With Trevor Kell in the penalty box for holding, the Oilers wasted little time restoring their lead. A series of quick passes from Nathan Lutz and Scott Macaulay moved the puck to the near face-off circle where Robinson stick was waiting for a one-timer. The veteran center didn't as much heat on the shot as he hoped but with Owen over-committed on the far side of the net, Robinson's shot found a wide open cage and the Oilers held a 4-3 edge with 11:56 remaining. Michel Beausoleil's empty net goal put the finishing touches on the Oilers triumph as the Oilers ended the season series against Missouri with a 2-7-0 record.

Tulsa earned two wins at the Independence Events Center for the first time since the 2009-10 season. With the win, the Oilers can finish no worse than seventh in the final CHL standings. Fogal, who made 33 saves overall, turned aside 16 shots in the third period to preserve his third win as an Oiler.

The Oilers will close out the regular season on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. against the Denver Cutthroats at the BOK Center.
