Mavericks Complete Sweep of Fuel
November 27, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Missouri Mavericks swept a weekend pair from the Indy Fuel, and finished their five-game road trip with four wins, thanks to Sunday's 2-1 triumph. The win also extended the Mavericks' win streak against the Fuel to nine games and improved their record to 8-8-1 on the season.
Missouri has made a habit of getting off to good starts on this road trip and that continued this afternoon. The Mavericks converted a 3-on-2 rush into a 1-0 lead 6:01 into the contest. Radoslav Illo worked down the left wing and attemped to center the puck into the slot, but a diving Fuel defender blocked the attempt. The rebound caromed right to Rocco Carzo who slammed home his sixth goal of the season and extended his goal streak to four games. At the other end of the ice, Ville Husso made his second start of the road trip and thwarted each of the 13 shots the Fuel sent his way.
Even though the Mavericks and Fuel traded a goal each in the second period, the show was stolen by Husso. He made two spectacular saves - a reaching glove save on a Marek Tvrdon breakaway and a sprawling pad save to deny a 2-on-1 - to preserve Missouri's 2-1 lead. Indy had tied it when Tyler Currier slammed home a pass from the doorstep at 3:57, and had a chance to pull ahead when a power play was awarded 20 seconds later. The Mavericks flipped the script, though, with their first shorthanded goal of the season. Kevin Tansey broke in from the blue line and dodged a defender so that he could beat Jake Hildebrand with a backhander. It was Tansey's second goal of the season and gave him three points (1g, 2a) on the weekend.
Husso had to remain stout in the third, as well, as the Fuel poured 13 shots on net in an attempt to wipe out the deficit. The Mavericks' rookie netminder was up to task every time, though, and did not allow the Fuel to draw even. The Mavericks did not have many chances to pad the lead in the third as they were held to five shots. The best chance came around the midway point when Jacob Doty centered to a streaking Shawn Pauly, but his deflection was smothered by Hildebrand.
Husso won his second consecutive start with a 41-save effort and was named the game's first star. Missouri went 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendar! The Mavericks return home on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 7:05 p.m. to face the Allen Americans.
