Boise, ID (11/26/16)- The Idaho Steelheads (11-5-2) scored twice on the power play and goaltender Landon Bow made 30 saves as the Steelheads swept their two-game series with the Allen Americans (8-11-0), capping it off with a 5-2 win in front of 4,730 fans at CenturyLink Arena. The Steelheads had a 3-0 lead and a 25-16 advantage in shots after 40 minutes, but the Americans brought heavy pressure in the third with 16 shots. Bow stopped 14 of them, including several through heavy traffic, to secure his eighth win of the season. He is 7-1-0 with a .931 save percentage in his last eight appearances.
Idaho opened the scoring at 11:54 of the first period on a power play one-timer from the point by Brandon Anselmini, his second goal of the season. The power play struck again at 6:43 of the second, when Travis Ewanyk collected a rebound off the end boards from a Jefferson Dahl shot and tucked in his seventh of the year. Ewanyk is now tied for the team lead in goals.
At 10:56 of the middle period, Anthony Luciani broke in alone after a stretch pass from Will Merchant, sliding a breakaway back-hander behind Riley Gill for his sixth of the season and a 3-0 lead. The assist was Merchant's second of the night, the rookie stepping up in the absence of usual linemate Rob Linsmayer.
Allen would get on the board at 11:35 of the third period after Greger Hanson popped out of the penalty box and picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone for a breakaway goal, his second tally of the series and ninth of the season. Idaho struck back 3:32 later when a series of odd-man rushes in both directions ended with Joe Basaraba's fourth goal of the year, a wrist shot off a 3-on-1 that beat Gill under the cross-bar.
Spencer Asuchak's seventh goal of the season off a rebound in front at 17:39 brought Allen closer, but Corbin Baldwin's first goal of the season into an empty net would ice the win for Idaho.
The Steelheads penalty kill was perfect on the evening, and they have now killed off 27 of 29 short-handed situations over the last eight games.
