Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Kansas City Mavericks (9-1-1-0) pushed their win streak to seven games with a convincing 5-3 win over the Wichita Thunder (4-4-3-0) in front of a sellout crowd of 5,800 area students on Kids Day Tuesday at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.

At 9-1-1, the Mavericks are off to their best start in team history through 11 games, besting the 2013-14 club's 9-2 mark. The victory was the Mavericks' seventh-straight and sixth of six home games.

Mark Cooper guided the way with three assists on the offensive end and Ben Halford had yet another strong outing, turning away 31 of 34 shots in the game while collecting an assist on Mike Panowyk's second period goal.

It did not take long for the home team to score in this one, Kansas City capitalizing just three minutes in with Greg Betzold's fourth goal of the season to get an early edge. Wichita answered, though, Travis Brown's fourth goal to draw even before heading into the locker room.

The visitors got the jump earlier in the second, controlling play for large spans and eventually beating Halford to take a 2-1 lead. The Mavericks flipped the switch after, though, potting two before the intermission from Rocco Carzo and Panowyk to take a 3-2 edge into the room.

The third was all Mavericks, Kansas City lighting the lamp twice in the first 3:36 to put the game on ice as Jared VanWormer and Darian Dziurzynski each found twine on the man-advantage before Dyson Stevenson's goal late in the frame.

The Mavericks and Thunder meet once again on Friday in the second of three-straight contests between the clubs, the first of a back-to-back set in Wichita.
