Mavericks 2017-18 Season Wrap-Up

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Kansas City Mavericks concluded the 2017-18 season with a record of 34-32-4-2, finishing sixth in the Central Division.

Here is a look back at the ninth season of Mavericks hockey.

Cooper Named Team MVP

Mark Cooper finished the season as the team's leading scorer after he was voted Team MVP by his teammates - announced at the team's annual awards gala on March 31. Cooper posted a career-best 47 points on 23 goals and 24 assists, following up a 42-point outburst in his rookie season with the Rapid City Rush.

VanWormer Lights It Up

Jared VanWormer completed his rookie season as the ECHL's leading scorer in power play goals, finishing with 14. The ECHL's top threat on the man-advantage closed out the season with 15 points (8G+7A) over the last 12 games of the year. The turning point in his season came with the addition of Corey Durocher to create the second line of Durocher-Cooper-VanWormer on Feb. 16 as he totaled 24 points (13G+11A) starting in the Feb. 16 game against Indy.

Pauly's Breakout Season

Shawn Pauly had a breakout season with 41 points on 24 goals and 17 assists. The Bellingham, Washington native claimed two hat tricks on the year, one in November and one in March, and he also lit the lamp on the Mavs' lone penalty shot of the season. Pauly's first season in the ECHL in 2016-17 campaign saw him score 14 points on six goals and eight assists, a far cry from his production this time around.

Heat Check

The first year of the Mavericks' affiliation with the Calgary Flames and Stockton Heat started promisingly with six players on AHL deals joining the Mavericks - a pair of netminders in Tyler Parsons and Mason McDonald, some offensive firepower in Mike McMurtry, Darren Nowick and Hunter Smith and defenseman Kayle Doetzel. Unfortunately, injuries throughout the Calgary organization forced heavy departures out of Kansas City with McMurtry leaving after 30 games and Nowick after 22. Parsons and McDonald racked up frequent flyer miles throughout the campaign after a Flames trade of Eddie Lack sent ripples throughout their system in goal.

Injury Bug Hit Hard

The Mavericks lost some key pieces to injuries this year, including alternate captain Rocco Carzo going out for the season after just 12 games. Only captain Tyler Elbrecht was able to lace up for all 72 contests, while Hunter Smith (35 games), Justin Breton (37 games), Matt Robertson (41 games) and Troy Donnay (49 games) all missed extended time to this season on the mend.

Rotating Door In Goal

The Mavericks saw a franchise-record seven goalies play in the 2017-18 season, the product of call-ups and injuries. In total, the Mavs played four affiliated goalies with two coming from Calgary (Parsons and McDonald), one from the New York Rangers (Chris Nell) and one from the Washington Capitals (Adam Carlson). Additionally, KC played two from the SPHL in Kent Patterson and Mavric Parks, who won ECHL Goalie of the Week on Feb. 27.
