Montgomery Biscuits News Release

Montgomery -- Jarod Matthews took a tough loss in a pitcher's duel in his last outing, but tonight he left no doubt as the Biscuits beat the Suns 5-1 before 3,654 fans at Riverwalk Stadium Monday night. Matthews (2-2) went six innings, allowing only one unearned run as he cruised to his second win of the season. Derek Thompson (1-1) suffered his first loss of the year.

The top of the lineup did all of the damage for the Biscuits, as Joey Gathright, B.J. Upton, and Juan Salas had every RBI for Montgomery in the ballgame. Gathright led off the ballgame for the Biscuits with a chopper that he beat out for a single. He would end up 3 for 3 on the night. After Gathright moved to second on a Suns error, Jace Brewer laid down a surprise bunt to put runners on the corners. Upton would then step to the plate and hit a bloop single that scored Gathright. Juan Salas tacked on another run when he singled to right to plate Brewer, and give the Biscuits a 2-0 lead.

Montgomery struck again in the third when Jace Brewer led off the inning with a double off of the left field wall for his second hit of the game. Upton then stepped to the dish and knocked his first triple of the season to right-center to push the lead to 3-0. Juan Salas got his second RBI of the game by singling in Upton, and the Biscuits led 4-0.

That would be all that the Biscuits pitching staff would need, as Matthews, Austin Coose, and Josh Parker combined to hold the Suns to just five hits on the evening.

The two teams complete their four-game set at Riverwalk Stadium on Tuesday night. The Biscuits will send Willie Glen (0-1, 5.00 ERA) to the mound to take on the Suns' Andrew Brown (1-1, 2.52 ERA). Game time is 7:05.
