
G-Braves, Smokies Split Two-Hit Double Dip

GREENVILLE, SC--The Tennessee Smokies and Greenville Braves took turns two-hitting each other Monday night as the G-Braves captured game one 9-1 and the Smokies won the nightcap of the doubleheader 10-0 in front of 1,466 at Municipal Stadium. Zach Miner (1-3) and two relievers dominated Tennessee in the opener, and Brad Thompson (4-0) returned the favor facing only 22 batters and throwing just 70 pitches in game two.
Tennessee picked up three runs on three hits in the first off of Macay McBride (0-4). The first three batters of the game reached with John Nelson picking up a two-RBI double. After a strikeout, Corey Erickson hit a triple off the base of the center field wall to plate Nelson.
The hits kept on coming for the Smokies with a run in the fourth and three scores in both the fifth and seventh. The G-Braves hits came via and infield single by Tony Pena in the fourth and an opposite field single by Andy Marte in the seventh.
The G-Braves got single runs in the first two innings of game one against Smokies starter Chris Narveson (0-3). Kelly Johnson singled home Pena, who had reached on shortstop John Nelson's error, for the first run of the game. Napoleon Calzado lead off the second with a triple to center and scored on a Brayan Pena groundout.
The Smokies first hit of the game came in the third as eighth place hitter Gabe Johnson got a hold of a Miner fastball for a solo homerun.
Greenville picked up two more runs in the fourth on three hits with the runs coming via a Miner sacrifice fly and an Adam Stern double.
The G-Brave bats made sure to cement the opener with five runs in the sixth. Marte unloaded on Josh Kinney for a three-run homer, and Bill McCarthy ripped the next pitch to center for his fifth homerun of the season.
Game Notes
Thompson has now pitched 30.1 innings without allowing a single run this year...RHP Ralph Roberts was reassigned to "A" Myrtle Beach prior to Monday's games...Greenville players plan to all change numbers tomorrow in an effort to jump start their 6-19 season...The G-Braves wrap up the eight game home stand Tuesday evening with a game against the Smokies at 7:15 at Municipal Stadium...Scheduled starters are RHP Josh Axelson (0-3; 9.00) for Tennessee and LHP Matt Merricks (0-1; 9.00) for Greenville...Tuesday is also Two-For-Tuesday sponsored by WROQ Rock 101 FM.
