Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The adage good pitching beats good hitting applied as the Montgomery Biscuits limited the Suns to five hits in a 5-1 victory Monday in front of 3,654 fans at Riverwalk Stadium.

One day after the Suns blasted Montgomery for 11 runs in a seven-inning game, manager Dino Ebel used virtually the same lineup, but Biscuits starter Jarod Mathews stymied the Suns (17-8). Mathews (2-2) earned the win, allowing four hits over six innings – a single and double each to Jason Repko and Sergio Garcia.

The Biscuits (10-15) sprinkled four consecutive singles to start the game off Suns starter Derek Thompson (1-1) who earned the defeat. An infield single, bunt single and two bloop singles to right plated two runs for Montgomery. Thompson was peppered in the third inning, however, as he allowed a leadoff double and a subsequent triple and single.

Joey Gathright, the Biscuits leadoff hitter, got on base all four times and led all batters with three hits.

SCORE: Montgomery Biscuits 5, Jacksonville Suns 1.

TURNING POINT: The Suns loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but managed one run out of it. They'd get only one baserunner the rest of the game.

SUNS HIGHLIGHT: Jason Repko extended his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest for a Suns batter this season and the longest current streak in the Southern League.

SUNS LOWLIGHT: The Suns' record against West Division teams fell to 4-6.

AROUND THE BASES: OF Reggie Abercrombie was assigned to Class A-Advanced Vero Beach in hopes his return from an offseason knee injury is healed. If his rehab is successful, he could report to Jacksonville in a couple weeks.

ON DECK: The Suns (17-8) at Montgomery Biscuits (10-15) at 8:05 p.m. tonight in the final game of a four-game series. Right-hander Andrew Brown (1-1, 2.52 ERA, league-leading 44 strikeouts) is scheduled to start for the Suns against Montgomery righty Willie Glen (0-1, 5.00).
