Matt Anholt Named Associate Head Coach; Hurricanes Extend Hockey Staff

LETHBRIDGE, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club announced on Wednesday that Matt Anholt has been promoted to Associate Head Coach and Assistant General Manager while the entire hockey operations staff, including Assistant Coach Ryan Aasman, Athletic Therapist Marty Palechuk and Equipment Manager Rhett White have signed two- year extensions.

Anholt, 30, has spent six seasons with the Hurricanes in various roles including Skills & Development Coach, Assistant Coach and most recently as Assistant Coach and Assistant General Manager. He will assume the Associate Head Coach role under current 'Canes Head Coach Bill Peters while also continuing as the Assistant General Manager. Anholt also signed a two-year contract extension.

The Prince Albert, SK, product represented the Hurricanes internationally at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge last season serving as an Assistant Coach with Canada Red U17. Anholt joined the 'Canes prior to the 2018-2019 season as a Skills & Development coach after a four-year playing career at the University of Alaska-Anchorage (NCAA) when he served as Captain for the final two seasons. Prior to playing at the University level, he spent two seasons with the British Columbia Hockey League's West Kelowna Warriors, serving as Captain in his final year.

Aasman, 32, will enter his fourth year with the Hurricanes after signing a two-year contract extension. He joined originally joined the 'Canes prior to the 2021-2022 season as Video Coach before being promoted to Assistant Coach - a role he's held for the past two seasons.

Prior to joining the Hurricanes, the Medicine Hat, AB, product spent the 2020-2021 season as the Head Coach of the Calgary Northstars U18 AAA team after one year with the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Grande Prairie Storm where he served as Interim Head Coach. He also spent time as an Assistant Coach with the Lethbridge Golden Hawks U15 AAA (2017-2018) and the Lethbridge Hurricanes U18 AAA (2018-2019). Aasman spent four seasons playing for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns after a junior career that included time in the Western Hockey League and AJHL.

Palechuk, 44, agreed to a two-year contract extension. The Smoky Lake, AB, product has served as the 'Canes Athletic Therapist for the past season eight seasons after joining the team prior to the 2016-2017 season. Palechuk previously won a WHL Championship with the Kootenay ICE during the 2010-2011 season working with now Edmonton Oilers Head Coach and 'Canes alumni Kris Knoblauch. He also spent time as the Athletic Therapist in the AJHL with the Camrose Kodiaks, Grande Prairie Storm and Drumheller Dragons while also representing Canada at the 2008 and 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

White, 39, also signed a two-year contract extension. The Swift Current, SK, product has spent the last eight seasons with the Hurricanes after joining the team midway through the 2016-2017 season. White spent parts of nine seasons in Junior- A split between the AJHL and BCHL spending three years with the Power River Kings, two years with the Grande Prairie Storm and five season with the Nanaimo Clippers. He represented Canada at the 2013 World Junior-A Hockey Challenge while also representing Canada at the 2014 Under-17 National program summer camp.
