Mathews Powers Tobs past Daredevils

KILL DEVIL HILLS N.C. (June 28, 2011)- Ryan Mathews was named The Coastal Plain League's Co- Hitter of the week on Tuesday for the past week. Also on Tuesday, Mathews hit two homeruns as the Wilson Tobs (13-13) defeated the Outer Banks Daredevils (11-13) by a score of 3-1. Mathews hit a two-run homer and a solo shot, accounting for Wilson's only runs. Mathews has now extended his hitting streak to ten consecutive games.

Outer Banks got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning. After a leadoff double, Wayne Hawkins hit a groundball single to first base. Joe Costigan couldn't beat the fast Hawkins to the bag and the Daredevils had runners on the corners and nobody out. Tobs starter Chase Bebout tried to pick off Hawkins at first and the throw got away from Costigan. Scoring from third on the error was Tyler Sciacca. Outer Banks was up on Wilson 1-0 after three full innings.

The Tobs answered right back in the top of the fourth inning when Keith Morrisroe lead off with a solid single to right field. Two batters later Ryan Mathews hit his Coastal Plain League leading seventh homerun to deep left center field. The Tobs now enjoyed a 2-1 lead after three and a half innings.

In the top of the seventh inning, Mathews did it again. Ryan took the 1-1 pitch from Rich Hawkins and placed it over the left center field wall once again. The solo homer was Mathews 8th of the season and second of the night. The Tobs enjoyed a 3-1 lead at the stretch.

The Tobs brought in Tony Wieber in the eighth inning to try to record a two inning save. Wieber moved from right field to the pitcher's mound. Wieber put down the side in order in the bottom of the eighth. In the ninth, Chad Carmen led off with a single but then Tony Wieber retired the side ensuring the Tobs victory and his forth save of the season.

The winning pitcher was Chase Bebout (1-3). Bebout pitched seven full innings allowing seven hits one run which was earned. Chase only walked one hitter, but he also hit one batter. Bebout struck out six Daredevils on the night.

The tough luck loser was Richard Hawkins (1-1) who pitched six and one third inning. Hawkins allowed 4 hits, three runs, all earned, with two walks and two strikeouts. Hawkins also allowed both homeruns to Mathews, which was the difference.

The final score was the Wilson Tobs 3 and the Outer Banks Daredevils 1.

The Wilson Tobs will return home on Wednesday Night to Historic Fleming Stadium at 7:05pm to take on the Fayetteville SwampDogs. This will be the first meeting of two between the two squads. No pitching match up has been announced at this point. Wednesday is also Dollar Dog night at Fleming Stadium. All hot dogs can be purchased for just one dollar. 16 ounce Yuengling drafts will also be available for just two dollars. For tickets, call the Tobs office at (252)-291- TOBS.
