With the start of the College World Series championship series between Florida and defending champion South Carolina (logos courtesy of Florida and South Carolina Sports Information offices, and the NCAA) set to begin tonight, the Coastal Plain League is proud to announce it has 22 alums from both teams combined.

The Gators have four players that are CPL alums or are signed to play for the 2011 season after the CWS is completed. Those four are Vickash Ramjit, Jeff Moyer, Justin Poovey and Alex Freedman. Poovey spent the 2010 summer with the Forest City Owls, where he went 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA through 21 innings pitched, and helped the Owls win the 2010 Petitt Cup championship. This season, he has pitched 7 2/3 innings with no decision and a 3.52 ERA.

Ramjit, Moyer and Freedman are all signed to play in Wilmington this summer, and Freedman ‚¬" a freshman ‚¬" has already reported and is batting .232 with 12 RBIs and nine runs scored through 21 starts for the Sharks. Meanwhile, Ramjit is batting .384 with seven RBIs and 17 runs scored for the Gators, and Moyer is batting .250 with 11 RBIs and eight runs on the 2011 season.

For South Carolina, there are 17 players who have CPL experience or are signed to join respective CPL teams after the CWS, in addition to one coach ‚¬" Sammy Esposito ‚¬" who played for the Durham Braves in 2000 while playing college baseball at N.C. State.

Among the Gamecocks are second baseman Scott Wingo (Gastonia, 2008 / Columbia, 2009), shortstop Peter Mooney (Florence, 2010), and pitchers John Taylor (Florence, 2009) and Colby Holmes (Florence, 2010). Currently, Wingo is batting an impressive .341 with 28 RBIs and 47 runs scored, while Mooney has a .278 average with 36 RBIs and 42 runs. On the mound, Taylor is 7-1 with a 1.17 ERA through 69 1/3 innings of work for South Carolina, while Holmes is 7-3 with a 3.69 ERA through 85 1/3 innings. They ‚¬â„¢ve struck out 63 and 77 batters respectively.

Florida got to the final series by defeating Texas, 8-4, and then beating Vanderbilt twice ‚¬" 3-1 and 6-4. South Carolina made it back to defend its title by handing Texas A&M a 5-4 loss, and then sweeping the top national seed in Virginia, 7-1 and 3-2.

Last year, the CPL had 14 alums on South Carolina ‚¬â„¢s 2010 National Championship team.

Game 1 of the CWS championship series is slated for 8 p.m. on ESPN tonight. Game two will be Tuesday at 8 p.m.
