CPL Names Players of the Week for Week 4

The Coastal Plain League announced Tuesday that Wilson ‚¬â„¢s Ryan Mathews and Edenton ‚¬â„¢s Joe Wendle were named the Rawlings Co-Hitters of the Week, while the Pitcher of the Week honors went to Forest City ‚¬â„¢s Andrew Brown for week four of action (June 21-27).

Mathews, a redshirt-junior from N.C. State led the league in just about every offensive category on the week. Batting .423 through seven starts for the Tobs, Mathews had 11 hits (second-best mark on the week) with league highs in doubles (3), home runs (4), RBIs (9), runs scored (9), total bases (26) and slugging percentage (1.000). Furthermore, he had a .467 on-base percentage to go with three walks and three stolen bases.

Meanwhile, Wendle led the league in both average (.593) and hits (16) in six starts for the Steamers. The junior from West Chester University added three doubles and a homer of his own, while also recording five RBIs, seven runs scored and 22 total bags. He was second in the league with a .607 on-base percentage, and tallied a .815 slugging percentage as well as being a perfect 2-for-2 on stolen base attempts.

On the mound, Brown pitched a complete game shutout of Gastonia on June 23. The 6-3, 190-pound right-hander from Akron went nine complete innings of four-hit baseball, walking one and striking out 10. Earning the win and keeping a perfect 0.00 ERA on the week, Brown also held opposing batters to a low .133 against him.
