Memphis Redbirds News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis beat Oklahoma 1-0 Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park thanks to a late home run from Joe Mather.
With two out in the bottom of the eighth inning Mather crushed his eighth homer of the year to put the Redbirds on top. Jason Motte nailed down the victory striking out the side in the ninth and earning his first save of the season. Mather and Nick Stavinoha finished the day with two hits apiece with Brian Barden picking up the 'Birds only other hit.
Memphis starter Mitchell Boggs struck out a season-high 10 batters over seven innings but did not factor in the decision. The right-hander scattered two hits and walked two on 114 pitches. He joins Blake Hawksworth as the only two Redbirds pitchers to fan 10 batters in a game this season. Hugo Castellanos earned the win with one scoreless frame in Memphis' third shutout of the year. Oklahoma starter Steve Rowe matched Boggs for five innings before giving way to the bullpen. Rowe struck out three and allowed four hits in five scoreless innings. Kameron Loe took the loss for the RedHawks after giving up Mather's home run.
The Redbirds head for Nashville tomorrow to begin a four-game series with the Sounds. Left-handed prospect Jaime Garcia will be on the hill for the 'Birds and oppose Sounds southpaw Sam Narron. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
