Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK - The Express opened up the cleaning closet Sunday, pulling out the brooms for the first time since August of last year with a four-game sweep of the Iowa Cubs.
Round Rock put broke a late tie and put up seven runs in the eighth inning en route to a 9-1 win, stretching its winning streak to a season-high five games and notching its first series sweep since winning four against Albuquerque between Aug. 27-Aug. 30 of last year.
Chad Reineke made the most of his eighth start, going a season-high seven innings for his second win. The right-hander scattered five hits, fanned three and didn't allow a run past the first inning. Reineke also trimmed his ERA from 7.88 to 6.69.
Yordany Ramirez and Nick Gorneault both notched three hits for the Express and Tomas Perez picked up his first home run.
The eight-run victory tied a season-high for Round Rock, which has outscored the opposition 36-12 over the last five games.
The Cubs tagged Reineke for the game's first run in the first inning on Matt Murton's two-out triple and Josh Kroeger's follow-up single through the middle.
But the lead didn't last long as Round Rock responded in the bottom of the second, evening the score 1-1 on Ramirez' RBI-double off Randy Keisler. Keisler worked seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, one walk and nine strikeouts.
Reineke retired nine consecutive Cubs over the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings and then helped the Express take a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
Gorneault led the inning off with a single through the left side and moved to third on Ramirez' second double of the game. Reineke then delivered an RBI-single - his first hit of the season - to break the tie.
The gates then opened up as Reggie Abercrombie extended the lead with a one-out RBI-single in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Andy Cavazos. Gorneault followed with a single to left that put Round Rock ahead by three.
With the bases loaded and Cavazos still on the mound in the eighth, David Newhan shot a liner to first that skirted through the legs of first baseman Koyie Hill, allowing Humberto Quintero and Gorneault to score.
Perez made the Cubs pay further when he slapped a 93-mph Cavazos fastball over the right-field wall with one away and two aboard, extending the lead to 9-1.
Round Rock hits the road Monday for a four-game series in Albuquerque before returning home Friday for a four-game set with Omaha.
