Legion FC Game Notes
Legion FC welcomes Memphis to BHM for the second time this season looking to build upon its 3-1-0 record at home. The three-game home winning streak began with a 1-0 win over Memphis on May 15, and game in which leading goal scorer Neco Brett bagged the lone goal, via a goalkeeper assist from Matt VanOekel.
Brett has stayed hot, as he is tied for second in the USLC with eight goals in 11 games, but he will be without the support of countryman Junior Flemmings for a while, as Flemmings has joined Jamaica for the Gold Cup, and Zach Herivaux is with Haiti.
Defensively, the side is strong, having registered five clean sheets this season, tied for the most in the league, and the backline got a boost this week with the signing of 2020 All-League First Teamer Thomas Vancaeyezeele. VanOekel will join captain and center back Phanuel Kavita in leading from the back, as they are the two players on the team to have played every minute this year. Kavita is first on the team in clearances, third in tackles and fourth in interceptions, and MVO is currently third in the USLC with 38 saves and tied for first in clean sheets.
Memphis heads to town looking to get back on the winning side of things, with a draw and two losses in its last three. The attack has sprung to life recently, with four goals in the last two games, led by Kyle Murphy's three goals in his last 97 minutes played, but the attack is still second bottom in the league with nine goals on the season.
While the defense has given up five goals in its last two games, it had looked stout and only allowed eight goals the first seven matches of the year, so 13 on the year is middle of the pack in the USLC. Murphy leads the team in goals this year with four, Kadeem Dacres is tops in shots with 17, and Laurent Kissiedou is first in assists with two and chances created with 18. 901 FC is also missing a key performer due to international duty, as midfielder Dre Fortune has joined Trinidad and Tobago for the Gold Cup.
Tomorrow's contest will see Legion FC take the field for the first time in its new 'We Are Birmingham' all-white away kits and battle to keep its position atop the Central Division, while Memphis will look to get a new winning streak going in its push to get back in playoff contention.
Midfielder Bruno Lapa is the only Legion FC player on the VIVA Health Injury report, as he is questionable with a lower body injury, and defender Freddy Kleemann has been recalled from loan by Austin FC.
The Black and Gold get a bit of a break following Saturday's match, as the next game is not until Saturday, July 24, at Indy Eleven. Tune in on My68 and ESPN+ to catch all the action!
The team will return to BBVA Field to host Atlanta United 2 on Saturday, July 31, at 6:30 PM. Tickets are available HERE or by contacting the Legion FC Ticket Office at 205-600-4635 or tickets@bhmlegion.com.
