July 9, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

Fresh off the exciting finish against San Diego Loyal SC last Saturday, Republic FC came away with a point in a rematch with Oakland Roots SC on Wednesday night.

The contest would see the hosts control their opponents attacking third for the entirety of the matchand put together an excellent defensive showing. Mark Briggs' men would post their second clean sheet of 2021 - the club's first since their season opening victory on April 30 against LA Galaxy II.

Scoring Chances

The Boys in Old Glory Red had no issue putting together scoring chances, tallying 19 shots to Oakland's two.

Tucker Bone led the way for Republic FC on the offensive end, posting four shots through 55 minutes. The third-year midfielder nearly gave Republic FC a 1-0 advantage in both the 25th and 45th minute, and came close to assisting an excellent look by Cameron Iwasa just before the 20 minute mark.

Courtesy of stifling defensive play from Republic FC backs Shannon Gomez, Mitch Taintor, Dan Casey, and Duke Lacroix, Oakland would go without a scoring chance until late in the second half. The visitors' first look wouldn't come until the 72nd minute, when a shot from midfielder Max Ornstil would be stopped by Tomas Gomez for his lone save of the night.

Oakland would generate only one more chance throughout the remainder of the match despite holding a slight edge in possession, as they were unable to penetrate a well-disciplined defensive approach from Republic FC.

Penagos Makes Second Consecutive Start

Academy product Mario Penagos, who logged 80 minutes during the club's draw with San Diego Loyal SC on July 3, made his second consecutive start on Wednesday. The 19 year-old went the distance for Republic FC, putting one of three shots on frame.

Penagos' appearance marked the eighth straight match to feature an alumni of Republic FC's Academy, whose U17 and U19 squads both reach the semifinals of the MLS Next Cup tournament in Dallas, TX. Republic FC was the only club that had multiple squads finish in the top four.
