MATCH PREVIEW:

Manager Landon Donvoan said it last month when this match was announced.

"We have been waiting for this day for a very long time," Donovan said.

And the time is here. SD Loyal will finally face its soccer neighbor Club Tijuana Xolos in an international friendly. But for soccer fans in the region, this might be more than just an exhibition match. Regional bragging rights might be at stake, for now. Or it might just be a chance for a good soccer match that helps unite fans in this region.

"We waited for the chance to bring Baja and Alta California together on the soccer field," Donovan said. "We're excited to play Xolos and celebrate soccer in this region. Should be a great match and we are very much looking forward to it."

SD Loyal will move forward with its USL Championship season after this match as it is riding an eight game unbeaten streak after 12 games. It is coming off a 1-1 tie against Sacramento Republic last week.

The match against Xolos comes during a break in the regular season calendar and it helps Donovan's squad keep rhythm in a long season. Club Tijuana is in its preseason preparing for the 2021 Apertura that begins later this month.

Club Tijuana Xolos is one of Mexico's youngest teams, founded in 2007 as a second division franchise that played at a local municipality field. It went on to reach promotion to Mexico's top-flight in 2011 and went on to win its first LIGA MX title in 2012. It has competed and advanced deep into the final rounds of international competitions such as the Copa America and CONCACAF Champions League. It is currently in transition to a new era under new coach Robert Siboldi.

This will be the second time SD Loyal hosts an international team in its short existence. Donovan's team made its Torero Stadium debut with a friendly against Panama's Costa del Este FC in early Spring 2020.

SD Loyal returns to USL Championship action Wednesday July 14 with a home match against Orange County SC.
