May 21, 2004 - Eastern League (EL1)
Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Reading Phillies Mascot Band, presented by Sovereign Bank, will perform a medley of birthday songs for the Phillie Phanatic on Sunday, May 23 during his birthday celebration at Citizens Bank Park. This will be the first performance by the Mascot Band in 2004 and their first gig at the Phillies brand new park. They have played Philadelphia before with three shows at Veterans Stadium the last two seasons.
The band, which consists of Quack the Rubber Ducky on lead vocals and guitar, Bucky the Beaver on bass, Change-Up the Turtle on percussion, and Screwball on the drums, is scheduled to perform on the field at 1:10 PM during the pre-game birthday festivities for the Phanatic. The Mascot band was specifically asked to play at Citizens Bank Park by the Phanatic.
On Sunday, Philadelphia plays a 1:35 PM game vs. the San Diego Padres while Reading hosts the Trenton Thunder in a 1:05 PM start. This will be the first time Screwball, the captain of the mascot team, will miss the first pitch of an R-Phils game since he came to Reading from the planet Llabesab for the start of the 1990 season.
"Missing the start of an R-Phils game for the first time in my career is going to feel a little Screwy," Screwball said. "But, when the big guy (the Phanatic) called and asked us to help him celebrate his big day, in the new park, in front of 40,000 plus Phillies fans â we couldn't say no."
Blooper the Hound Dog will remain in Reading to entertain the R-Phils Sunday crowd until the others can return late in the game.
PERFORMANCE HISTORY
The Reading Phillies Mascot Band came to be during the 2002 Reading Phillies season. They played 13 gigs in 2002, including 10 at their home base of FirstEnergy Stadium, and an on-field show at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia that resulted in an appearance on ESPN's SportsCenter. In 2003 the band performed 13 times, including two shows at the Vet. They begin playing at FirstEnergy Stadium in the Classic Café after every Saturday home game beginning June 12.
Some people think there is some kind of trick to this band, but when you see them in person, you will realize that this is no smoke and mirrors show. It's giant, lovable mascots playing and singing great tunes â and it's fun! The music is surprisingly well presented and the mascots are hilarious.
