Canal Park Hosts Education Days
May 21, 2004 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
The Akron Aeros and Roadway Express capped off their sixth annual "Education Days" on May 13th, the last of five sponsored days. The total number of participants in the events were staggering: just under 27,000 teachers and students from nearly 300 schools attended, ranging from pre-kindergarden to high school seniors.
The program consists of an educational curriculum tying math and sciences into the game of baseball, while taking in a day game at Canal Park. The students participated in all kinds of activities before and during the game.
Selected students were given the opportunity to sing the national anthem before the games, while others stood with the players during the anthem. Others were given a chance to interview players from the Akron Aeros at home plate in the pre-game "Press Conference".
The first pitch for each game was thrown out by a student, while others were participating as "litter stewards", helping to promote Keep Akron Beautiful, encouraging students to not litter.
Other students were given a chance to be on the PA system and announce the players as they came to bat during the game. Meanwhile, participants were able to be on the air with the radio broadcaster in the press box.
On the concourse, there were many "Education Stations", where organizations were hosting tables with interactive activities and give-aways. Some of these organizations included the Akron Art Museum, Keep Akron Beautiful, Akron Regional Air Quality Management, the Akron Library, and the Boy Scouts, just to name a few.
Both the players and the students had a great time at this year's Education Days, and the team as well as the staff at Canal Park are excited about next year's events being even bigger.
