RECENTLY...The Aeros return to Canal Park this evening after a 2-5 road trip through Altoona and Bowie...Akron was swept by the Curve last weekend at Altoona and split a four-game series with the Baysox.
WHAT'S NEXT...Tonight, Akron opens up a short three-game home stand against the Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates) and they have an off-day on Monday before heading back out on the road to Erie and Harrisburg.
GOOD LUCK!...Today, the Aeros released SS ZACH SORENSEN...He is expected to sign a free agent minor league contract with the Anaheim Angels organization and will report to Triple A Salt Lake, close to his home in Utah...In 26 games with the Aeros this season, he hit .258 (24-93) with 12 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 9 RBI & 9 SB.
ACTIVATED...With Sorensen's departure, INF TODD WEST was activated today from the Disabled List.
WHO'S THE NEW GUY?...That would be RHP ANDREW BROWN, who was the player-to-be-named-later in the Milton Bradley trade...With Double A Jacksonville, Brown was 1-3 with a 4.02 ERA in eight starts (40.1 IP, 36 H, 23 R, 18 ER, 14 BB, 58 SO)...At the time of the trade, he was leading the Southern League in strikeouts...He was originally a sixth round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves in the June, 1999 draft...He was traded to the Dodgers organization on January 15, 2002 along with OF BRIAN JORDAN and LHP ODALIS PEREZ for OF GARY SHEFFIELD...Brown, who was born in Chardon, Ohio, will wear #43.
ROSTER MOVES...To make room for Brown on the roster, RHP FAUSTO CARMONA was sent back to Class A Kinston...In this lone start with the Aeros, Carmona suffered the loss but pitched well (7.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 3 SO).
WHILE WE WERE GONE...Akron placed RHP TRAVIS FOLEY on the Disabled List with soreness in his right elbow...Akron also received LHP MARCOS MENDOZA from Extended Spring Training.
LEADER BOARD...CF FRANKLIN GUTIERREZ is seventh in the Eastern League in batting average (.331), he is fourth in hits (48) and is tied for fourth in doubles (15)...LHP OSCAR ALVAREZ is tied for second in wins (4)...RHP LEE GRONKIEWICZ is tied for the league lead in saves (8)...RHP FRANCISCO CRUCETA leads the league in innings pitched (49.1)
