
Marvelous Marshall Leads Crabs to Win

WALDORF, MD . - Ian Marshall pitched into the 8th inning and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs scored three times in the 1st inning en route to a 6-1 series-opening victory over the Sugar Land Skeeters at Regency Furniture Stadium. The win takes Southern Maryland back over .500 at 8-7 and moves them within a half game of first place.
Marshall (7-5) won his fourth consecutive start scattering a run on four hits in 7.2 innings. The Blue Crabs have won six straight starts in which Marshall has taken the mound. Steve Hammond (6-6) suffered the loss surrendering four runs in five innings of work.
The Blue Crabs jumped on Hammond for three runs in the bottom of the 1st. Angel Chavez singled with one out and after Jake Opitz singled to right, a throwing error by shortstop Dominic Ramos went into the third base dugout and Chavez was awarded home plate. Luke Murton and C.J. Ziegler followed with consecutive RBI doubles to push the lead to 3-0.
Southern Maryland tacked on another run with two outs in the 4th. Bobby Stevens doubled down the left field line and then scored as Jermaine Mitchell hustled to beat out an infield single.
Nick Stavinoha ended Marshall's shutout bid with two outs in the top of the 7th as he waited on an 0-2 curveball and launched it over the wall in left for his team-leading 11th home run of the season.
Jamar Walton provided two insurance runs in the last of the 8th. With the bases loaded, Walton looped one over third base for a two-run single and a 6-1 advantage.
The Blue Crabs continue their series against the Sugar Land Skeeters tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Southern Maryland has yet to announce a starter while David Pauley (6-6, 2.81) is slated to start for Sugar Land. Purchase tickets for the game by visiting www.somdbluecrabs.com or calling 301-638-9788.
