Bluefish Acquire MLB Veteran Fred Lewis

(Bridgeport, Conn. - July 24, 2014) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the acquisition of outfielder Fred Lewis. Lewis has been acquired from the Lancaster Barnstormers for a player to be named later.
"I was fortunate to coach Fred when I was with the San Francisco Giants organization," says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. "Now the Bluefish are fortunate to have a player of his caliber on the team. He adds tremendous ability with both his bat and glove."
Lewis joins the Bluefish, which will be his second Atlantic League team this year during his 13th season of professional baseball. The outfielder started this season with the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League appearing in 42 games, recording a .222 batting average with five doubles, one triple and three home runs, 15 RBI, four stolen bases and 16 runs scored.
The 33-year-old has played seven seasons at the Major League level as a member of the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets. Fred had his best big league season as in 2008 with the Giants compiling a .282 batting average with 25 doubles, 11 triples, nine home runs, 40 RBI, 21 stolen bases and 81 runs scored in 133 games. In 535 career MLB games, he has recorded a .266 batting average with a .403 slugging percentage, 91 doubles, 21 triples, 27 home runs, 81 RBI, 53 stolen bases and 261 runs scored.
In 2013, the Mississippi native played the entire season with the Hiroshima Carp of the Japan Central League. In 79 games he compiled a .268 batting average with 19 doubles, four home runs, 20 RBI, 12 stolen bases 36 runs scored. In 764 career minor league games, Lewis owns a .282 batting average with 141 doubles, 56 triples, 56 home runs, 314 RBI, 163 stolen bases and 501 runs scored.
Fred was selected by the Giants in the second round of the 2002 MLB Amateur Draft out of Southern University and A&M College.
