Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 29, 2010) - Newcomer Jose Martinez hit a two-run double and made a diving catch to save a run as the Dash reversed an early deficit to beat Salem 9-5 on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem trailed 4-0, but reeled off nine straight runs to secure another home series victory.

The Red Sox (2-4, 44-32) scored in the first inning for the third straight game, notching a pair off Nate Jones to start the game. Ryan Lavarnway hit an RBI double and Jorge Padron brought in a run on a single to make it 2-0 Salem.

Jones (6-2) shut down the Red Sox offense for the next two innings, but yielded two more runs in the fourth. Salem started the frame with four consecutive base hits, including an RBI double by Padron and a run-scoring base hit by Will Middlebrooks to give the Sox a 4-0 lead.

Winston-Salem (3-3, 46-30) finally got to Salem starter Caleb Clay in the bottom of the fourth. After falling behind 0-2, Eduardo Escobar battled to fill up the count before doubling to right. Jon Gilmore drove him in with a double of his own to get the Dash on the scoreboard. Seth Loman made it three straight doubles with a two-bagger to center that brought in Gilmore. After Loman got to third base on a fly out by Josh Phegley, he scored when Clay (2-6) uncorked a wild pitch while facing Martinez. The three-run inning cut the Red Sox lead to 4-3 heading to the fifth.

Clay ran into more trouble in the sixth inning. The first two got on when Escobar reached on an error and Gilmore was hit by a pitch. The two moved into scoring position on a groundout by Loman. Phegley then hit a ground ball to Middlebrooks at third base. Escobar tried to score from third, but Middlebrooks came home and Tim Federowicz made the tag for the second out of the inning.

Martinez came to the plate with men on first and second and two outs. He was making his Advanced-A debut after a knee injury sidelined him for nearly two seasons. He drilled the first pitch he saw to the centerfield wall, scoring both Gilmore and Phegley to give the Dash a 5-4 lead. Ozzie Lewis followed with a two-run homer to left field, capping a four-run inning that put Winston-Salem ahead 7-4.

Martinez got Winston out of a jam in the seventh inning with an outstanding catch. Santos Rodriguez entered the game with men on the corners, two down and Oscar Tejeda at the plate. Tejeda hit a sinking liner to right and Martinez went horizontal making a diving catch to end the inning.

Kenny Williams, Jr. hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to score Luis Sierra and Lewis to make it a five-run lead.

Salem pushed across one in the ninth but suffered its fourth loss in six games at BB&T Ballpark. Clay was tagged with the defeat after giving up seven runs (three earned) in six innings.

Jones got the win in his second-longest outing of the season. He gave up four runs on 11 hits in 6.2 innings. Tyson Corley retired two batters with the bases loaded in the ninth for his first save of the season.

The Dash improved to 8-1-2 in home series this season, upping its record at BB&T Ballpark to 26-10.

Winston begins a three-game series with the Potomac Nationals on Wednesday night. LHP Charlie Leesman (7-4, 5.62) opposes LHP Evan Bronson (2-5, 4.08) in a 7 p.m. start. The audio webcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
