Keys Drop Rubber Match to Rocks
June 29, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
Despite scoring first, the Keys (3-3, 44-32) dropped the rubbermatch of the three-game set, 4-3, against the Wilmington Blue Rocks (4-2, 36-40). Frederick scored a run in the first on a RBI single by 1B Joe Mahoney but were then held scoreless until the ninth inning. Wilmington scored two runs in the third and another in the fourth as they held on to the victory in the series finale.
After RHP Oliver Drake tossed a scoreless top of the first, Frederick plated a run against Blue Rocks' starter, LHP John Lamb. With one on and one out, Joe Mahoney drove in CF Kyle Hudson on a RBI single to centerfield. Mahoney's RBI was his team-leading 49th of the season.
Wilmington took the lead from the Keys in the top of third. With 2B Rey Navarro on first, LF Adrian Ortiz drove the Drake pitch over the rightfield wall for his first home run of the season. The Ortiz drive gave the Blue Rocks a 2-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the inning.
Frederick looked like they were going to counter in the home half of the third but John Lamb struck out DH Miguel Abreu and 3B Billy Rowell to end the inning and leave the bases full of Keys.
The Rocks increased their lead to two following a Rey Navarro double that brought home RF Nick Francis in the top of the fourth.
Drake did not allow a run in his final three innings of work as he finished up the night tossing a season-high seven innings.
Wilmington starter, John Lamb, exited the game after four innings and he made way for LHP Ivor Hodgson. Hodgson worked effectively through the Keys lineup, allowing just two hits over 4 2/3 innings of work. Hodgson was relieved by RHP Harold Mozingo in the bottom of the ninth with two out and one on. RF Ronnie Welty singled home Avery to cut the Blue Rocks lead to just one. The next batter up for Frederick, 1B Joe Mahoney, could not bring home the tying run as he grounded out to second to end the game.
Oliver Drake (2-3) got the loss for Frederick while Ivor Hodgson (4-6) picked up the victory. Harold Mozingo notched his second save of the season.
Frederick hits the road on Wednesday for the start of a six-game roadtrip. The Keys begin the trip in Salem, VA as they take on the Salem Red Sox. First pitch is set for 7:05 as the Keys face RHP Miguel Gonzalez (1-0, 5.82).
The Keys return home on Wednesday, July 7, when they play host to the Potomac Nationals.
