Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 2/22/09 - For the first time in four home games, the Amarillo Gorillas failed to collect a point as they lost 5-1 to the Laredo Bucks at the Amarillo Civic Center Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first one-third of the first period, Laredo managed to get on the board first 7:57 into the game. Serge Dube got credit for the goal, after he tossed the puck towards the front of the net; the puck deflected off Amarillo defenseman James Jernberg's skate and behind goaltender A.J. Bucchino, giving the Bucks a 1-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, Joe Guenther answered for the Gorillas, netting a 2-on-1 goal from a Stuart MacRae feed, tying the game at one. The tie would be short-lived, after Darryl Smith deflected a Jaye Judd shot by Bucchino to push Laredo out in front once more. The Bucks would get a third first-period goal, when Matt Miller deflected the puck off a leg in front of the Amarillo net and in, setting the score at 3-1 to conclude the initial twenty minutes.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second period, with Bucchino stopping 14 Laredo shots and Bucks goaltender Andrew Martin stopping nine Amarillo attempts. It appeared as though John Snowden broke the second period scoring draught mid-way through the frame, but a whistle blew the play dead before the puck crossed the goal line, keeping the Gorillas off the scoreboard.
Laredo would kill off two early Gorillas power play chances in the third period, gaining momentum as they maintained their two goal lead. The lead would be padded by man-advantage goals by Igor Agarunov and Ryan Salvis in the third, cementing the Laredo win, 5-1.
Amarillo (15-32-3) fell to just 0-4-0 against Martin in 2008-09-the Gorillas' first three games against the Bucks' goalkeeper came with Martin in a Scorpions' jersey. Bucchino fell to 5-10-2 after the loss, while Martin stopped 27 of 28 shots to earn the victory.
The Gorillas will by back in action Wednesday night at New Mexico, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 8:15 PM Central Time. Coverage of the game will be carried on 1010-AM "The Canyon" in the Amarillo area and worldwide via a free online video feed on the CHL Network.
