Marshall Strikes out Eight to Help SWB Top Indianapolis

Moosic, Pa. - A night after the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) had their eight-game winning streak snapped, a new streak began. The RailRiders topped the Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh Pirates) on Monday evening, 3-1. Brett Marshall struck out a season-high eight batters to help give SWB its ninth win in 10 games.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre wasted no time in scoring, as they plated one run in the first. Corban Joseph led off the game offensively for the RailRiders with a double to left field. One out later, Zoilo Almonte singled, which extended his hitting streak to 12 games and moved Joseph to third base. After a walk to Dan Johnson loaded the bases, Ronnier Mustelier legged out a fielder's choice which allowed Joseph to score from third.

The RailRiders added two more runs in support of Marshall in the sixth. With one out, Dan Johnson doubled to left-center field. One out later, Cody Johnson slammed a double off the right field wall, which scored Johnson from second base. Luke Murton followed by hitting a ball to first baseman Matt Hague. It went off the glove of Hague and into right field, which brought home Johnson and gave SWB the 3-0 advantage.

Indianapolis brought one run back in the seventh. Jerry Sands led off with a walk and one out later moved to second when Alex Presley walked. The bases were loaded after Ivan DeJesus Jr. reached on an error by Mustelier at third. Felix Pie then singled to right field, which scored Sands. Right fielder Addison Maruszak arrived at the ball quickly, and threw out Presley at home plate with a great throw.

The Indians threatened again in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs. DeJesus Jr. hit a hard grounder down the first-base line, but Johnson dove to his left to make the play, and retire the side.

Marshall (2-2) recorded his second consecutive victory. He allowed just one earned run in six innings, walking four to go along with his eight strikeouts. Jim Miller struck out two in the ninth as he set the side down in order to post his third save of the season.

With the series even, the RailRiders and Indians will play game three of the four game set on Wednesday morning at PNC Field. A special start-time at the ballpark of means the gates will open up at 9 a.m., with first pitch slated for 10:35 a.m. Graham Stoneburner (2-1, 2.65) will start for the RailRiders, and Indianapolis will counter with Kris Johnson (2-2, 3.86).
