Louisville Bats News Release
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Despite scoring first on Monday night, the Louisville Bats (14-17) dropped their series opener with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (14-16) 4-1. The Pigs' victory extended their current winning streak to four.
After solid starts from both starting pitchers, it was four unanswered IronPig runs in the sixth and seventh innings that would eventually doom the Bats. The loss moved Louisville to 2-3 on their current eight-game road trip.
Felix Perez's hot bat got Louisville started in the first when he reached on a fielder's choice that scored Henry Rodriguez and gave the Bats a 1-0 lead. Rodriguez had singled and advanced to third on Neftali Soto's base hit that broke a personal 0-15 skid. Perez and Rodriguez would be the only Bats to register multiple hits on the evening.
Chad Reineke (L, 3-1) was rolling for the Bats heading into the sixth inning, where the IronPigs finally got on the scoreboard and took a lead they would not relinquish. A Cody Asche triple set the table for Darin Ruf to single in the run that would tie the ballgame at 1-1. Lehigh Valley added on in the inning when Steven Lerud singled to left and scored Ruf, knocking Reineke out of the game and giving the IronPigs their first lead at 2-1.
Curtis Partch relieved Reineke, who struck out seven in 5.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits and three walks.
IronPigs starter Ethan Martin (W, 2-2) left the game after going six full innings, striking out four, and only allowing one earned run on five hits and a walk.
Jermaine Mitchell gave Lehigh Valley an important insurance run in the seventh when he took Bats reliever Kevin Whelan deep to right field for his second homer of the season to give the Pigs a 3-1 lead. Ruf registered his second RBI of the game in the inning when he singled and scored Cesar Hernandez to extend the Lehigh Valley lead to 4-1.
Michael Stutes (H, 1), who came on in relief of Martin for the IronPigs, was dominant in his two innings of work, striking out two en route to setting down six Bats in order in innings seven and eight.
The Pigs left the door cracked open after leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, but Jake Diekman (S, 2) struck out two in the top of the ninth and closed the book on the Bats.
The Bats and IronPigs will continue their four-game set at Coca-Cola Park tomorrow night at 7:05. RHP Armando Galarraga (1-1, 1.80) will take the mound for Louisville against Lehigh Valley RHP B.J. Rosenberg (0-3, 5.11).
