Rochester Red Wings News Release
Rochester Red Wings (12-19) @ Toledo Mud Hens (9-23)
Fifth Third Field - Toledo, OH - 6:30 p.m.
RHP P.J. Walters (3-2, 3.82) vs. LHP Casey Crosby (1-4, 5.02)
TODAY'S GAME: After losing 2 games in a row for the first time in 2 weeks the Wings will look to right the ship in game 2 of their 4-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers) tonight at 6:30 p.m. from Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH. The Wings are coming off a series split against the Columbus Clippers and are now 2-3 so far on their 8-game Western Division road trip... Since a season-high 4-game winning streak April 24-27, the Wings are 3-5 in the last 8 games and currently sit in 5th place in the North -- 8.0 games back of Buffalo... Meanwhile, Toledo still owns the worst record in the IL at 9-23 and are already 13.0 games behind Indianapolis in the West.
MORE FROM LAST NIGHT...:
-The Wings 9-game winning streak over Toledo and 5-game win streak at Fifth Third Field was snapped
-The Wings tied season-highs in double plays turned (3) and stolen bases (3)
-The Wings extended their season-long streak of recording at least one extra-base hit to 15 games on Brian Dinkelman's 2nd inning double -- the only extra-base hit of the night for Rochester and 2nd game in a row where they have hit just one
VS. THE MUD HENS: The Red Wings swept the 2012 season series from Toledo winning all 8 games -- it is believed to be the first season series sweep against any opponent in franchise history and the first in the IL since Pawtucket went 8-0 against Richmond in 2006... Rochester earned the sweep last year outlasting the Mud Hens 10-9 in a 19-inning affair in the last game between the teams in 2012 on August 5. The game was the 3rd regular season contest in the IL that lasted 19 innings or more since 1985... Despite the sweep, Rochester is still just 38-43 against Toledo and 20-21 at Fifth Third Field since the beginning of the 2003.
WONDERFUL WALTERS: Tonight's Wings starter RHP P.J. Walters comes in 3-0 in his last 3 starts. Over that span he has posted a 1.80 ERA (4 ER/20.0 IP) while walking just 3 and striking out 15... In his first 3 starts of the year, Walters was 0-2 with a 6.46 ERA (11 ER/15.1 IP)... In his 2 losses this season he has allowed 22 hits in 10 IP - including a career-high 13 on 4/15 vs. SWB - however, in his other 4 GS he has yielded just 16 in 25.1 IP.
-The last time Walters won 3 straight starts was 6/5-6/21/11 with the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) of the Pacific Coast League when he won 4 straight starts
GOOD WOOD OFF WOOD: Since limiting opposing hitters to just one hit over his first 4 rehab appearances (1-for-16) and yielding no runs over 5.0 innings, Red Wings reliever RHP Tim Wood has allowed 6 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks in 3.0 innings over his last 3 appearances... Wood struggled early in 2012 as well going 0-3 with 2 blown saves and an 11.81 ERA (7 ER/5.1 IP) in his first 6 outings before going on to be named IL Relief Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America. Wood would allow just 10 ER on 43 hits in 64.2 innings over his final 48 appearances last season.
CLETE & COLABELLO: With Oswaldo Arcia promoted to Minnesota a few weeks back, 1B Chris Colabello has found a new running mate in the middle of the Red Wings order in OF Clete Thomas . Combined the duo is hitting .344 with 13 home runs and 36 RBI. Together they have accounted for over a quarter of the Red Wings hits this season (66 of 254; 26 %), almost half of the Red Wings home runs (13 of 28; 46%) and over a third of Rochester RBI's (36 of 103; 35%). In terms of their status in the IL, both rank in the top 10 in batting average (Colabello (.339), 8th; Thomas (.351), T-6th), both rank in the top 5 in home runs (Colabello (7), T-2nd; Thomas (6), T-5th) and both rank in the top 10 in slugging (Colabello (.591), 6th; Thomas (.636); 3rd)
HOT WING: 1B Chris Colabello has a chance to join Clete Thomas and Joe Benson with a season-long 9-game hit streak tonight... Over his current 8-gamer, Colabello is hitting .438 (14-for-32) with 4 doubles, a home run and 7 runs scored. After 2 hits last night, Colabello is now 10-for-19 (.526) over the first 5 games of the road trip with 5 runs, 3 doubles and a home run.
-On Saturday, he tied his career-high with his 2nd 4-hit game of the season
THE RIGHT ROTATION: After 6.1 scoreless innings from Andrew Albers on Monday, the Wings rotation hasn't allowed an earned run since the 6th inning on Saturday as their season ERA has dipped to a season-low 3.85. The last two times through the rotation, the starters have tossed 7 "quality starts" in 10 outings. Over than span the rotation's ERA is 2.87 (19 ER/59.2 IP)... Wings starters had posted just 2 quality starts over the first 21 games of the season.
