Hillsboro Hops News Release

HILLSBORO, OR - It was the first televised game of the season for the Hillsboro Hops and the boys certainly put on a show. In front of 4,047 at Ron Tonkin Field and thousands more on Comcast SportsNet Northwest, the Hops romped to a 10-4 victory over the visiting Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

The victory moved the Hops to a 22-20 overall record on the season and a 3-1 mark in the second half. Hillsboro entered tonight's game tied with Salem-Keizer for the second half lead in the NWL South Division, but after Friday's game held a one game lead.

There were a litany of heroes on the Hillsboro nine, but perhaps none larger than Luke Lowery. He knocked a double and three singles while driving in four on the night.

Hops shortstop Mark Karaviotis had his own share of highlights, including a ripped solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. It was the former Oregon Duck's first homer as a Hop, and just his second as a professional after knocking one out in AZL play. Jose Queliz launched a solo shot of his own in the eighth inning, a towering blast onto the Frontier Family Berm.

Tyler Mark notched another quality start for the Hops despite not having his tip-top stuff. The newly-minted NWL All-Star entered the game leading the league in strikeouts and innings pitched, and fifth in ERA. He posted six strong innings of two-run ball, scattering eight hits while punching out five. He dropped his ERA from 3.55 to 3.48 and will enter the All-Star Game in Ogden, Utah next week in good form.

Hillsboro continually capitalized on sloppy Volcanoes play, taking advantage of four committed errors and five issued walks from their pitching staff.

Third baseman Josh Anderson continued his hot hitting, stroking two more base hits to move his season average to .322. NWL walks leader Marcus Wilson drew two more bases on balls to extend his lead further. He has drawn a remarkable

Friday's game was the first of three televised games the Hops will host this year. Two more Friday games, 8/12 and 8/26, will air on CSNNW.

The series continues Saturday between Salem-Keizer and Hillsboro. It'll be a 5:03 Saturday start time. Pre-game radio begins at 4:30 on Rip City Radio 620 AM. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
