Volcanoes Stumble in Hillsboro

July 30, 2016 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

HILLSBORO, Oregon - The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes traveled up to Hillsboro to play the Hops in game one of a three game set and lost 10-4. Manager Kyle Haines got ejected for the first time this season after arguing vehemently about a play in the bottom of the third inning. The Hops would score a run in the inning.

The Hops took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after two singles and two walks and an unconventional non-putout 4-3-6-2 double play. The Volcanoes knotted up the game in the top of the third after back-to-back singles from designated hitter Dylan Manwaring and second baseman Kevin Rivera. A double play scored Manwaring in the next at bat. Center fielder Bryan Reynolds singled and a two-out double from right fielder Heath Quinn scored Reynolds from first base.

Hillsboro capitalized on errors by Salem-Keizer in the fifth inning and tacked on three more runs to lead 6-2. Nolan Riggs came in for relief of Vizcaino, who lasted 4.1 innings. Riggs gave up a solo home run to Hops' shortstop Mark Karaviotis in the sixth to make the score 7-2.

Quinn hit a line drive home run to left field in the eighth inning - Quinn's second hit and second RBI of the night - which cut the Hops' lead to just four runs. The Volcanoes did not score again in the inning. Catcher Jose Queliz hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth to take the Hops' lead back to five runs. After the dust settled in the inning, the Hops had scored three runs and led 10-3 heading into the ninth.

Scoring a run after a leadoff walk to left fielder Ashford Fulmer, shortstop Ryan Howard forced an error which put runners at second and third, and an infield single by Rivera scored Fulmer. However, that was all the Volcanoes could muster in the ninth and dropped the game 10-4. Quinn went 2-for-3 on the night with a home run, double and two RBIs but his efforts were not enough to beat the Hops in game one of the three game series.

The Volcanoes are back in action against the Hops in Hillsboro at Ron Tonkin Field Sunday night, July 30, with a 5:05 p.m. start. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
