D.C. United News Release

CHANTILLY, VA (October 22, 2002) - D. C. United today announced completion of a successful surgery on the right knee of captain Marco Etcheverry. Team physician, Dr. William Hazel performed the procedure this morning at Commonwealth Orthopedic Surgical Suites in Herndon, VA. During the operation, Hazel removed a portion of Etcheverry's torn lateral meniscus. Etcheverry is expected to be fully recovered when the team re-convenes for the 2003 campaign.

"We are pleased with the results of today's surgery," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "We expect Marco to be back at full strength in the near future."

Playing in 24 matches (23 starts) this season, Etcheverry registered a team high eight assists and scored three goals, resulting in a team-high 14 points and his first-ever D.C. United Budweiser Leading Scorer crown. 'El Diablo' tallied his first assist during the season opener against LA (3/23) on Ali Curtis' go-ahead goal. Two of Etcheverry's three goals would be scored by way of free kicks, with the first against Chicago on 3/30 proving to be the game-winner and earning him MLS Player of the Week honors for Week 2. His third goal of the year would come in stoppage time of the first half against the MetroStars (9/12) and would also end up being the game-winner. Etcheverry would notch his only multiple-point game of the season on 9/14, assisting on both United goals in a 2-1 victory over the MetroStars. Etcheverry served two suspensions due to caution point accumulations, missing matches against Chicago (5/4) which ended up in a 0-3 loss for United and Columbus (7/24) where United yielded a 0-1 defeat.
