New York Red Bulls News Release
SECAUCUS, NJ (October 22, 2002) - A new logo and a new uniform look-in addition to a new head coach-signified the beginning of a new tradition today for the MetroStars.
The hiring of all-time MLS wins leader Bob Bradley as its new head coach coincides with the launch of the team's new logo, the first re-design of the logo since the team's inception in 1996, as well as the unveiling of a new uniform design for the 2003 season.
The new MetroStars logo is a more traditional soccer crest, featuring a three-sided, red-and-black shield divided into four quadrants. It was designed in a collaborative effort by the MetroStars marketing department, Rich Levy of Major League Soccer and the advertising agency TBWA Chiat/Day New York.
"We are committed, both on the field and in the marketplace, to creating a new brand identity for the MetroStars," said team Executive Vice President John Guppy. "Our motivation in changing our logo, and our visual look, was to immediately have them both communicate 'soccer,' which our previous logo just didn't do, and to have the logo establish a connection to the sport's rich tradition. Most importantly, we had to have it support the red-and-black symbolism of the MetroStars, which is integral to our brand identity. "With the launch of our new look, and the arrival of Coach Bradley, we believe the new MetroStars tradition has already begun."
To convey the sport's tradition, the MetroStars wanted the new logo to be shaped in the much more soccer-traditional crest, and opted for a three-sided crest to symbolize the team's roots in the tri-state (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) area.
Within the crest, which is divided into four quadrants-two red, two black--are a soccer ball (lower right corner), the team's red-and-black uniform stripes (upper right corner), and a star in the upper left corner signifying "MetroStars" as well as excellence.
