San Jose Earthquakes News Release

San Jose (Tuesday, October 22, 2002) - San Jose Earthquakes midfielder/forward Devin Barclay was selected today to the United States Under-20 National Team's roster for the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship.

U.S. head coach Thomas Rongen selected the squad that will play in the CONCACAF tournament November 13-17 at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina. The U.S. will be joined by Haiti, El Salvador and Canada in Group B, with the top two teams advancing to the FIFA World Youth Championship in the United Arab Emirates from March 25 - April 16, 2003. Mexico and Panama have already qualified from Group A.

Barclay has gained valuable experience at the international level in 2002, playing in 13 matches with the Under-20 National Team and four games with the Under-23 National Team. Barclay and the Under-20 team head into the CONCACAF qualifying tournament fresh off a successful second-place finish in the C.O.T.I.F. XIX Torneig Internacional in L'Alcudia, Spain at the end of August. Barclay captained the squad in the three matches he played in Spain, scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Italy. Barclay has a total of three goals in 2002 for the Under-20 National Team. The U.S. Under-20 National Team is 14-7-9 in 2002 and will be hosting a qualifying tournament for the first time since 1980.

2002 was Barclay's first season with the Earthquakes and second in Major League Soccer, and he ended the year by playing twelve games for San Jose. Barclay scored three goals and registered two assists for the Tampa Bay Mutiny in 2001. Other MLS players included on the U.S. Under-20 Qualifying roster include Bobby Convey (D.C. United), Eddie Johnson (Dallas Burn), Justin Mapp (D.C. United), Santino Quaranta (D.C. United) and Jordan Stone (Dallas Burn).

U.S. Soccer and Innovative Sports Marketing have partnered to make the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team's three matches available on pay-per-view. The three U.S. qualifying matches will be shown live and are available for $19.95 each through DirectTV and Time-Warner cable (in New York City).
