Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Three days in Akron, three one-run losses for the Curve. The host Aeros outlasted Altoona in a pair of those one-run contests on Sunday, sweeping a getaway doubleheader and a three-game series with finals of 4-3 in 13 innings and 3-2.
Following up their 2-1 win from Friday night after a Saturday rainout, the Aeros continued their strong work on the mound in Sunday's opener. After the Curve took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an error and a wild pitch, the Aeros countered with one of their own and held close from there. Down by the same margin with two outs and two strikes on their potential final batter in the seventh, Akron capitalized on a wild pitch, as well, bringing Kyle Bellows home to score on an errant offering from Kyle Cofield to even the game at 2-2.
Five innings later, it appeared the Curve had broken through when Quincy Latimore singled home Matt Curry to give Altoona the lead back at 3-2. It was short-lived. Akron once again pulled level on an RBI single by Jared Goedert, and in the 13th, they ended it. Ryan Rohlinger's leadoff walk turned into the game-winning run three batters later when, again with two outs, Michael Hernandez singled him home for the victory. The Aeros' first walk-off win of the game made a winner of reliever Preston Guilmet (1-0) and handed the loss to Kris Harvey (0-2), his second of the series.
In the nightcap, pushed back to a 5:30 start time due to the three-hour, 45-minute opener, things went much the same for the Curve. Akron seized the game's opening lead in the third before Altoona tied it in the fourth on an RBI hit from Ramon Cabrera. The Aeros pulled in front again in the sixth when Ben Copeland doubled in Chun Chen to put themselves three outs away from a series sweep.
The Curve didn't go down easily, though, battling to tie the game in the seventh with three straight singles to open the inning from Curry, Latimore, and Charlie Cutler, the last of which plated pinch runner Brock Holt with the game-tying run.
In the bottom of the seventh, though, not wishing for extra innings again, the Aeros walked off once more. After loading the bases with two outs, Rohlinger came into score on a wild pitch by Duke Welker (0-1) for the win. T.J. McFarland (4-1) earned the complete-game victory by way of the night's final run, tossing all seven innings.
The Curve head out of Akron for the first of four at Erie beginning Monday night at 6:35 p.m. Altoona will send left-hander Nathan Baker to the hill opposite Erie's Zack Segovia. Airtime on ESPN 1430 in Altoona and the Curve Radio Network is set for 6:05.
