SERIES AT A GLANCE: The Flying Squirrels will aim for the fourth consecutive win and their first series sweep of 2012 when they take on the New Britain Rock Cats in the finale of a three-game series at The Diamond today. Last night, the Flying Squirrels got multi-hit performances from a host of players, including Gary Brown and Daniel Mayora, who each had two hits and two RBIs in a 5-3 victory over the Rock Cats. The Squirrels got a solid performance from starter Craig Westcott, who allowed three hits and one earned run with two walks and two strikeouts in five innings of work. Westcott trusted his defense and was rewarded as the Squirrels turned five double plays, the most for Richmond since recording six twin killings at Harrisburg on May 7, 2010. The Flying Squirrels went 8-7 against New Britain in 2011 including a 4-4 mark at The Diamond. Richmond is 19-14 all-time against the Rock Cats and the club is 11-5 all-time in the River City. The two teams will meet 14 times in 2012, seven times in New Britain and seven times in Richmond. The Rock Cats claimed the opening series by winning three out of four games between the clubs at New Britain Stadium (4/5-4/7).
TODAY'S PITCHERS: LHP Jason Stevenson vs. LHP Logan Darnell Stevenson: Makes his fifth start of the season for the Flying Squirrels today. In his last start, Stevenson allowed three hits and two earned runs along with a season-high five walks and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched at Reading Tuesday. He took the loss in Richmond's 6-0 setback. Stevenson is 0-1 all-time against New Britain with an 11.57 ERA in one start (4/6/12). Stevenson, a former Montreal/Washington farmhand returned to baseball following a five-year hiatus for personal reasons that began after the 2005 season. The 30-year-old southpaw signed with the Chico (CA) Outlaws of the independent North American League in 2011 and posted an 8-0 mark with a 1.68 ERA in 9 appearances, including 8 starts and earned a spot in the NAL All-Star Game.
After signing with the Giants, Stevenson went 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his lone start with Richmond as he allowed just one earned run in seven innings pitched at Altoona on Sept. 5. He also posted a 1-0 mark with a 5.56 ERA in two starts with Triple-A Fresno.
Stevenson boasts a 35-40 record with a 4.65 ERA and three saves in 156 career minor league appearances, including 66 starts. He was originally selected by the Expos in the 12th round of the 2000 June Draft out of Sacramento City College. Stevenson resides in Redding, Calif.
Darnell: Makes his fifth start of the season today. In his last start, Darnell experienced his worst outing of the season as the southpaw allowed eight hits and six earned runs with four walks and no strikeouts in three innings pitched against Portland Tuesday. He received a no-decision in New Britain's 7-6 triumph. The southpaw split the 2010 campaign between three Minnesota affiliates, Low-A Beloit, Advanced-A Fort Myers and New Britain. In a combined 26 appearances, all starts, Darnell posted an 11-6 record with a 4.37 ERA. He began his pro career with Advanced-Rookie Elizabethton in 2010 and went 2-3 with a 2.08 ERA in 11 appearances, including five starts. In 2008, In 41 career minor league appearances, including 35 starts, Darnell owns a 15-9 record and a 4.06 ERA. He was selected by the Twins in the 6th round of the 2010 June Draft out of the University of Kentucky.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE: The Flying Squirrels turned a season-high five double plays in last night's win over New Britain.
Four of the five double plays were ground balls handled by the middle infield tandem of Ehire Adrianza and Ryan Cavan and one double play involved an assist from right fielder Juan Perez. It was the first time Richmond has turned five or more double plays in a game since May 7, 2010 when the Flying Squirrels turned six double plays at Harrisburg. Richmond has now turned 28 double plays on the season, which is tied with the Reading Phillies for the most double plays in the Eastern League.
ME GUSTA MAYORA: After going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored last night, Daniel Mayora posted his team-leading 10th multi-hit game of the season. It was his first multi-RBI game of the season. In his first season in the Giants organization, the veteran third baseman is hitting .342 with 11 RBIs.
CLOSE CALLS: The Flying Squirrels are now 3-1 in two-run games after last night's win over the Rock Cats. Additionally, Richmond is now 9-4 in games decided by two runs or less. The Flying Squirrels are a combined 39-29 (.574) in two-run games in franchise history.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Flying Squirrels will look to continue their winning ways at The Diamond as they continue their home stand tonight. Richmond is 6-3 at The Diamond this season and has posted winning records in the River City in both 2010 (37-33) and 2011 (45-26). The Flying Squirrels boast an all-time record of 88-62 (.587) at The Diamond.
