Peoria Chiefs News Release

PEORIA, IL - The Chiefs rode their best pitching performance of the season to a 3-1 victory over the Beloit Sky Carp on Thursday evening, as Edgar Manzo and Gianluca Dalatri combined to allow just one hit while punching out 11 Beloit hitters.

Manzo, who was making just his fourth High-A appearance and his third start in a Chiefs uniform, worked a 10-pitch first inning and sat the Sky Carp down in order.

Jacob Buchberger provided Manzo with an early lift offensively. With the bases empty and two outs in the first, the second baseman hit a line drive rocket over the left field fence to put the Chiefs in front, 1-0. For Buchberger, it was his first long ball since April 29 against Wisconsin.

The Peoria offense created some separation in the middle innings for Manzo, who breezed through four no-hit innings. In the home half of the fourth, with Buchberger at second, Tyler Reichenborn grounded one towards Beloit second baseman Jose Salas. His throw to first pulled Marcus Chiu off the bag and allowed Buchberger to streak home from second after Chiu started jogging toward the dugout, thinking he secured the inning's final out.

In the fifth, Brady Whalen climbed in and pulled a base hit into right field, plating Todd Lott all the way from first to nudge the Chiefs lead to 3-0. Lott, who had mashed three homers in the first two games of the series, finished 1-for-4 this evening.

With Beloit still hitless moving into the seventh, the Sky Carp finally caught up with Manzo, as Victor Mesa's solo shot to left ended not only the no-hit bid, but also the shutout. Manzo then exited the game to a rousing applause for the Peoria faithful after working into the seventh.

Patrick Anderson then turned to the bullpen and called upon Gianluca Dalatri, who promptly struck out a pair of batters to end the seventh. He then retired the side in order in the eighth and slammed the door in the ninth, punching out the side in the ninth while working around a free pass to earn his fourth save.

The win lifts the Chiefs to 4-8 in the second half and 32-46 overall. Game four comes tomorrow night at 6:35 from Dozer Park. Austin Love will make the start for the Chiefs, with Dax Fulton penciled in for the Sky Carp. Cardinals reliever Drew VerHagen is expected to make his second appearance for the Chiefs Friday as he continues his rehab assignment. Tickets are still available for all three home contests this weekend.
