January 11, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
QUACK TRACKS
Splitsville
After splitting a pair of games with the Midwest Division-leading Komets over the weekend at the iWireless Center, the Mallards finished the weekend as they started it: in second place, one point off the top spot in the division. The Komets have four games in hand on the Mallards.
Tight
The top four clubs in the Midwest Division are separated by just three points. Just as the Mallards trail first place Fort Wayne by one point, the third place Indy Fuel (36 points) is just a single point behind the Mallards and the Cincinnati Cyclones (35 points) are a further point behind Indy in fourth place.
Rebound
The Mallards won yesterday after suffering back-to-back losses and dropping six of their prior seven games.
Blanked
Yesterday's whitewashing of Fort Wayne was the first shutout of rookie Steve Michalek's career. Michalek set career highs and team season highs by making 42 saves and by stopping 23 shots in the third period. The shutout was Michalek's first since he made 27 saves to stonewall Princeton while playing for Harvard in a 5-0 Crimson win on February 27, 2015. Yesterday's muzzling of the Komets was the Mallards' first shutout since a 4-0 silencing of the Wichita Thunder on March 27, 2015.
Red Light District
The Mallards yesterday kept the Komets off the scoreboard one game after allowing seven Fort Wayne goals last Friday. The Mallards gave up more goals last Friday than they have in any game since dropping an 8-5 Central Hockey League decision to the Bloomington Blaze on March 12, 2013.
Home Sweet Home?
Yesterday's win halted the Mallards' team record-tying four-game home regulation losing streak. The Mallards have gone just 2-5-0 in seven home games since starting the season 10-1-1 on home ice.
Shooting Gallery
The Mallards have been outshot in each of their last five games and eight of their last nine. They have allowed at least 34 shots in each of their last five games and nine of their last ten.
Four Score
Matt Carey has scored four goals and added one assist in his last four games and has scored seven times and notched five assists for 12 points in 12 games since first joining the Mallards last month.
Streaking
Austin Coldwell is on a four-game point-scoring streak (1-6-7).
Arch Madness
By scoring yesterday, Olivier Archambault moved into a tie with Matt Neal for the team lead in goals (10).
Iron Mike
Mike Monfredo recorded his twentieth assist last Friday and is now tied for second among ECHL defensemen in assists, tied for fourth among defensemen in points (23) and tied for ninth overall in assists.
Many Happy Returns
Four Mallards returned to the lineup last Friday after time out due to injury: forwards Carey, Tanner Eberle and Kevin Henderson and defenseman Kevin Gibson. Each of the returning forwards recorded points in that game. Henderson scored his first Mallard goal, Carey also scored and Eberle picked up an assist.
Milestones
Mike Monfredo played his two hundred thirty-seventh career game for the Mallards last Friday against Fort Wayne to move past Kerry Toporowski into eleventh place in team history.
Special Teams
The Mallards held the Komets' league-leading power play to one goal on eight chances over the weekend. The Mallards rank third in the ECHL in penalty killing (86.9 percent). The Mallards have scored just once in their last 13 power plays and now rank twelfth on the power play (17.7 percent).
Head to Head
The Mallards opened their four-game season series with Kalamazoo by defeating the Wings 3-1 on home ice November 27. That game was the first clash between the Mallards and Wings since the Mallards defeated Kalamazoo 3-2 on March 30, 2007. The Mallards and Wings competed against each other in the United Hockey League between 2000 and 2007. The Mallards have now gone 25-19-7 in 51 all-time meetings with the Wings. They are 15-9-5 against Kalamazoo on home ice...The Mallards have gone 2-1-0 against the IceMen this season and have won each of the first two games between the two teams in Evansville. The Mallards last met the IceMen when the two clubs closed out 2015 by splitting a home-and-home series. The Mallards rebounded from a 3-2 home loss on December 30 by claiming a 6-4 victory at the Ford Center on New Year's Eve. All-time the Mallards have gone 11-9-0 against the IceMen overall and 7-6-0 in Evansville. The two teams met 16 times in the Central Hockey League in 2010-11 and 2011-12.
Ins and Outs
Matt Carey (who missed one game with an upper body injury), Tanner Eberle (seven games, upper body), Kevin Gibson (ten games, upper body) and Kevin Henderson (15 games, upper body) returned to the Mallard lineup last Friday. Gibson was activated from 21-day injured reserve last Friday...Zach Pochiro (upper body), who has missed the Mallards' last six games, last Friday was placed on 21-day injured reserve retroactive to December 28.
